I use my XBox (original I mean, not the 360) for emulators as well as XBox games, so occasionally I want to put new files on it's hard drive, and I use a network cable from my PC. But this is a little inconvenient as the XBox and PC are in different rooms, so I was wondering if I could use a memory stick instead? I've heard that you can make an XBox to USB connector by using the cable from an XBox joypad, and a USB cable, is this true? And if so, what wires have to be connected together (I'm clueless at electronics, so please spell everything out for me). Is it true that this will only result in a USB 1.1 speed connection? It doesn't matter about the speed though, as most game roms (that will run on XBox's emulators, I mean) are tiny, so even if it's only USB 1.1 that's fine. Also what software do you then use to transfer data from the USB stick to (and from) the XBox? Does XBMC's file manager work, or UnleashX's, or what? And if this is all possible, is it OK to leave the XBox to USB lead plugged into the XBox all the time, even when there's no USB stick attached? Thanks for any answers.
XBMC can read FAT32 and some others I believe on the Xbox, which makes it work well for transferring. I do believe the XBox is limited to 1.1 speeds, so your memory stick must be compatible. Most guides seem to recommend a memory stick of under 4gb, Ive only toyed around trying to get larger ones to work and had no such luck. You can make your own cable, or just buy a cheap one from China and wait. I know Id rather have the premade wire than a hacked together kit, especially if you arent the best with it.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Computer-PC...=US_Video_Cables_Adapters&hash=item19e65c48b5 They are sold for spit on Ebay, come in a few days from China. However, the Xbox is often picky with what USB sticks it "likes." Can you connect the Xbox into a router?
Yes, you can. Get http://m.ebay.com/itm/201025436427 or equivalent. Xbox software will get confused and think that it's attached to a controller, but whatever; it should work. I've never used such file managers, but memory cards should show up as drive letters. The bigger problem is that standard FAT-formatted flash drives won't work by default on Xbox. Either you need to use software on your PC that can write the special FATX filesystem or you need to use an Xbox file manager that understands FAT-formatted flash drives.
Connected a crosair 2 gb stick to ms dashboard. On second try it said it was corrupted and fixed it. Have a nice memorystick now wich i can read with xplorer360 (beta 6). You can transfer live accounts aswel (other thread about PSO)
They can be formatted just fine through the XBOX Dashboard, it depends what flash memory the usb stick uses.
That's why I had the either/or case; by formatting the USB stick as FATX using the Dashboard, you'd then need PC software that can write the FATX filesystem. =) For USB sticks on Xbox, I use my Phantasy Star Online official keyboard adapter to connect them to a controller like a memory card, but those adapters *seem* rare.
Can do my trick and replace the guts of a dead memory card with a female USB port. I have a few lying around. Mostly use them for keyboard adapters now though...
I had such a hard time finding a USB stick that the xbox would like! I went thru over 15 different ones! The best one is the Cruzer Edge 4GB. I have tried 2 versions of it. One was USB 2.0 and the other was the USB 1.1 version and both work great! Radio shack was clearing them out about a year ago and I grabbed 8 of them for 5 bucks each! The model number is SDCZ51
The name of the program that allows you to format to FATX is called USBFATXFormatter.exe The name of the program that allows you to write and read it once it is FATX is called Xplorer360.exe Before I unpacked it the .zip file was named Xplorer360.beta.zip This is the pack I got all the files from Softmod.Installer.Deluxe.v5.12.Final.Xbox-Hq
Here is the complete kit with all the files for a soft mod including all the formatting tools and the reading and writing tool. This should help anyone else that does not have it either! http://www.eurasia.nu/modules.php?n...wnloaddetails&lid=9709&ttitle=SID_v5.12_Final
I never found one that worked completely. One worked with Xplorer360 but not the Xbox, another was the opposite. Royal p.i.t.a.
Thanks for the advice and the links, everyone. On balance, I'll buy one from ebay, rather than challenge my almost non-existent soldering skills. I should have some small capacity USB sticks around somewhere, so hopefully one of them will work with the XBox.
I can make you a USB memory card adapter if you like. I actually have one right now. Looks like a standard first party card with a female USB port in the end. Even shaped the plastic to fit it. PM me for details if interested.
That's really good of you, mate, but a friend of mine has said he'll do it for me, which is more convenient (as I live in the UK, and you're in the USA). I do appreciate the offer, though, thanks.
