It says right at the bottom what version it is!

This is a very old video - I'm sure it has been discussed here years ago. I used to be able to play it pretty fast, but this is good!

I do that, in real life, every day, with boxes ranging from 30 to 120 pounds.

Seriously, if you like tetris, get a job with UPS.... lol. I seriously feel like i play box tetris for hours every day, day seems to go by pretty quickly when i think of it as playing box tetris XD

I'm 99% sure I saw that video on eBaumsworld like in 2003. Before that whole Youtube thing existed.

That record is very very old there has been more recent videos and better playing players than in that video. He almost died early.

(This doesn't mean I'm very good at Tetris though. :p)

Also Tetris The Grandmaster 2 isn't a Taito Type X games I'm quite sure, it might be custom or from another developer but I'm sure it isn't Taito Type X.

What is this "YouTube" that you speak of?I do love me some Tetris. Can't say I'm anywhere near that good, but practice makes perfect. Especially since Tetris has been ported to every console/phone/electronic device imaginable. Wonder if the mobile version is still free...

I think this video is even crazier, just watch near the end, unbelievable speed and he keeps playing into blind mode.

I can play the DS version about the same speed as these videos.

I have beaten people who had hacked the game for all straights by being faster than them.

I used to be able to play like that but not any more. Getting old. :(

I racked up just under 70 million points on the 3DS Tetris marathon mode. Did it over a few weeks playing a bit at a time.

Ha, I expected the OP was gonna have the video that MaxWar posted. Always loved that display of Tetris mastery. Unfortunately, I am always off & on Tetris, so instead of ever actually getting good, I just stay the same basic skill.

On high level play modern "official" tetris is quite broken, becoming more a system about having a "preplanned" system of block placement and automation. This in in contrast to old Tetris version where making ambiguous decision on where the possible optimal piece location is was the most important (and being truly random doesn't lend itself to automation).

This is because modern version don't have truly random pieces but rather a grab-bag of 7 and on average you get the same block in every 7 blocks, also you see more of your future blocks in a lot of modern version making everything quite predictable and thus he can get that speed. It's still impressive but it's far more automation than it would be in GB tetris where at high levels it's more risk reduction than automation, because you can't be sure of getting a block every 7 or so tetrominos.

I've been playing Tetris on the Game Boy quite a bit recently. I'm not very good at it, but I think I'm getting better. It's really fun, and also very addictive. The GB Pocket is the perfect system for that game, because you can just pick it up at any time. It can be a little problematic when I'm about to go to bed, and I think, "Well, maybe I'll just play Tetris for a little bit..." and then I can't stop.

I've probably spent more gaming hours on GB Tetris than any other game. Loved my Game Boy Light because lighting conditions were no longer a problem and I hated those add-on light things.

Lol. Spent many, many years playing on the GB brick in awkward positions so that a lamp could illuminate the screen. :)

Tetris DS plays nothing like TGM... it's kindergarten compared to the game in the video. I've also been quite good at Tetris DS, but it gets boring because it's so easy. Just a pure endurance challenge in endless mode.

I was lucky enough to play all the Grandmaster-games extensively in their original arcade versions (a friend of mine played TGM3 competitively! Very impressive skills he had, although it always killed him around lvl 800 in Death Mode). They're hard as nails... easily the most intense puzzle games around. The immediate dropping of the tetrominos is not optional, it's forced and they materialize within less than a half-second. It's impossible to realize how good these TGM2/3 players really are without having played the game oneself. Once you did, these videos are at least twice as mindblowing.

The game in the video is running on Psikyou's SH2-hardware, an arcade PCB. It's Tetris: The Grandmaster 2 Plus and has several enhancements over the regular TGM2 such as another mode. TGM3 was a Type X game, however.

Thats in Tetris DS too. However, it seems theres a trick in the DS version thats not in the arcade one (delaying the lock by rotation).

I should give the arcade one a go though, sounds fun.

In Tetris DS, the blocks lock in after maybe 1 second, which is multiple times longer than in higher levels of TGM2/3 - also, you can't delay it using rotation like on DS.

I played both Tetris DS and TGM2+ for a looong time, both are great fun in their own ways, but only TGM2+ is the warzone - DS is the playground. TGM3 I haven't played enough to get good at it, but the modes get even harder than TGM2+. Once you hit lvl 600 or so, it only takes miliseconds for blocks to manifest and they are instantly on the bottom of the field. To control where they go, you need to use a combination of pre-drop rotation and pushing the block in the desired direction. There is no time for anything beyond this in terms of controlling the game. Also the frequency of drops blocking is VERY high due to the quick manifestation of the blocks. I would say it can be roughly 2-3 blocks per second, making it possible to lose the game withing just the blink of an eye.

TGM2+ is perfectly emulated on MAME. Try it, it's great fun. You do need an arcade stick for proper gameplay though or else you can't keep up with the rotating and pushing.
