So whats the deal with all the crying on reddit about? as far as I understand apparently some DSL company started limiting their data to 20gb a month , but you have an option to get "insurance" which gives you extra if you go over that? The hell is that all about?:banghead: Or an I just misinformed?
The end of unlimited data, paying much more for what you already had etc. Reasons enough to rant. If I understand correctly ( I am not Canadian ) then most people have no choice as this ISP has some kind of monopoly.
You're best to read up on this stuff to understand it better. Essentially a ruling was recently set that unfairly favors big ISP like bell and allows them to be an even bigger monopoly. http://www.cbc.ca/technology/story/2011/01/31/f-faq-usage-based-billing.html It's pretty fucked up.
They claim that supposetly 90% of their users use less then 10gb a month which is total bullshit. I'm worried this will lead to bell eventually dropping their packages into the 20gb range for existing customers (which I am one of). I get 75GB a month but easily use 75gb-110gb mostly over my wife's streaming of Chinese shows back home. Even when she doesn't do that we tend to use 40gb a month providing I make no major downloads (like 4gb plus). -edit- It's starting to become a pretty big issue in canada so there is a good chance if the pressure keeps up for a month or so the ruling will get overturned.
Yeah it sucks. Where I live in Ontario I end up paying 99/mt for a 10mb line including 'overage' fees.
We had an internet contract like that about 10 years ago. 10gb/month and anything above was 50 cent/gb.
We have seen a shift of mobile data limits here in Holland lately. Were we first had unlimited data, now they are pushing for limits. For mobile data I can understand there are limits to bandwidth, especially now that almost everybody has a smartphone and streams youtube etc. No mention of data limits for home internet yet, and I hope this will stay like that. But seeing the trend of Canada/mobile data, and a huge amount of people abusing and downloading 1080p HD movies, PS3/360 games etc on a daily basis might change this.
If they are going to start metering us for usage they sure as hell better start offering the services we pay for (Unfiltered, unthrottled, full speed). Because if they complain that top tier users rape the network, i'll blow a gasket because now they charge them for that access! Give them what they are paying for. And if they start charging us for overages, they better offer refunds for people who don't purposely don't go over their limit. Bank it, offer a refund, or something. But if your going to charge per GB, it's only fair you charge people what they use.
IMHO I would for one. If I'm paying for access which is metered, I sure don't want to wait for it. I expect to get stuff in a timely manner. And if I decided I want to pay extra to do remote work from home, or run other services over my Internet connection I want to know that I won't be blocked/trottled/discriminated against. Essentially, any detriment that I give to your network based on bandwith is paid for per GB. So that being said, I'm paying for GB, speed, and reliability of the connection. There's no excuse anymore for degrading any of it.
It should be noted that bell is bad with throttling internet during certain hours of the day (I had an installer even confirm this to me). So its more then simply just paying for what you get.
**** yeah. this is a good thing. http://www.liberal.ca/ubb/ sure NDP was also for undoing UBB but their party is not as large a the liberal party. I can easily see the liberal party making a huge deal about this.
Fuck Bell and their services. I wouldn't go near them with a freakin 200 foot pole. They are good for SHIT! I think TechSavy put it well. Even though there is caps in place now, with their included insurance policy on their plans, you basically get more or less a decent amount of monthly bandwidth, 80gb for 34.00 per month *15 year Bell user, who switched elsewhere and never looked back.
I have to admit to still being on bell since i'm tied to my email for over 8 years and my building gets pretty solid speeds but this crap & the BS cock up by them when I moved units in my building is really pissing me off. I've dropped my TV service and was considering adding it back since I miss news & discovery channel (netflix is great but not enough tv related content for me which is what I primarily watch) but really I'm close to just pulling my remaining services (inet & phone) =| Funny, every time I get a call from bell trying to sell me on signing up for the tv again I tell them of the BS I had recently and they say "wow, sorry" and say they hope the service can improve down the line for me to return. lol.
I'm on Rogers. What I do is I pay for a low level service (I never get the speeds anyway even if I pay more for it) and then I rape the connection. Sure, I get charged overages, but they cap that at like $50 now (used to be $25). It ends up being about the same price as an expensive plan, except now I can save money if I don't decided to do heavy downloading for the month.
