This is funny because a few days before this happened, Netflix rated Canada as better than US when it comes to broadband infrastructure.

The average Canadian will have to pay extra to regularly stream netflix films. lol

I think perhaps the scariest part of this is the new trend of cloud based computing. If systems like Chrome OS and others are relying heavily on cloud based storage, it's going to get mighty expensive just to turn our computers on!

In all the years since I moved out of the womb, I have yet to see an ISP actually deliver the speed or quality of service they charge me for. If they even think about pulling this crap I'm afraid I'd lose what lil bit of sanity I have left.

Yay, UBB decision will be repealed but we have to see how it goes from there. CRTC can simply just go back and slighly modify it with out the root problem being fixed.

I almost predict, that a lot of people will begin to piggyback on unsecured networks.
If Canada does not get their shit together and removes the whole metered internet bullshit.

As a Canadian ex-pat I can tell you that in many smaller towns there may be only one choice for Internet, but most large cities have many different carriers.

Canadians embraced cable Internet a few years before the united states did and as such the cable co are the monopoly in many cases.

An example of a bad market for Internet shenanigans:

Calgary Canada with about 800,000 people at the time had shaw cable and the private telephone co that had at one time been govt run as the main dsl provider.
Since the telephone co owned ALL the dsl lines any new subscribers for any small dsl co had to ASK PERMISSION to use the existing line as dsl.
Want "joes dsl?" you may have to wait 2-4 weeks for an install.
Want ex govt company dsl? We can be over on Tuesday!

So it is rather anticompetitive in that regard... There are no "common carrier laws" like here in the states.

So if they want to draft a policy that says over 20g you are taxed or paging surcharges, I can see that happening...
