    Hi Asssemblergames.

I'm thinking of making some playthroughs of retro games to upload on Youtube. I like the idea of sharing gameplay and maybe making some Let's Plays. I never used to understand why people would watch them, but I've been crying with laughter watching some recently.

My question is, what is the best way to capture retro game footage? I was thinking of getting a second hand DVD recorder. Can they record RGB over SCART, and output the signal they receive to the TV? If they don't output that signal, I can probably fudge some leads together to split the signal in two anyway.

Is there a better method? I don't have a desktop PC, just a netbook, so an internal capture card is out of the question. Also, are there any good free video editing software suites available? All I'd want to do really is be able to adjust sound levels and split them etc.

Just use a PC Capture card. I record retro consoles via HDMI. All consoles go in to my Framemeister XRGBmini via RGB then from the Framemeister to my PC's capture card via HDMI. The result is high definition retro game image in amazing quality. Just check out my Retro Core show to see what I mean - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dcIydkGlmI make sure you watch in 720p :)

If you only want to capture SD footage (guessing since you said DVD recorder) you could try an EasyCap, it would be the cheapest way. Just make sure you pick up the DC60+ instead of the regular DC60, the regular one can have some problems with certain signals, the + version fixes those issues.

Yeah, just SD is fine since retro consoles don't output higher than that. I was hoping to be able to record RGB from SCART for better quality.. :)

Youll be hard pressed to find an RGB capture card, which is why Yakumo's setup is one of the best.
