As collectors we all like to keep our stuff as mint as possible, but some are just cursed. What case/boxes do you hate the most and why? Is it the fragility, sheer ugliness or the cheapass cardboard tearing when you try to remove a stubborn price sticker. Mine has to be the PAL Sega Mega-CD cases... I don't think there is a case out there that doesnt have those little hinge-like pegs broken or a huge ass crack across the front/back. And they never fit in any CD racks :| Share your horror stories and vent you anger about videogames packaging here.
PAL DC, and the earlier PAL saturn games were annoying as they just plain broke too often. The later Saturn cases were amazing tho! Also, having seen JP cube games, US and PAL cube cases (twice as big as they need to be, the japanese ones are awesomely small)
PAL DC - super fragile and difficult to replace Sega Genesis cardboard boxes - The original snap lock cases for Genesis games were damn near perfect (save for EA, they started with cardboard and later switched to plastic...typical). But then a few years into the Genesis' life span, Sega decided to package all their games in cardboard boxes and switched the manuals to cheap black and white photocopy quality paper.
most PAL game manuals nowadays are Black and White. (All playstation 2 games I ve seen so far - but then again, i m not big on PS2) Even nintendo manuals are Black n White in europe. In greece, the manual is just a piece of paper, folded, that directly translates pages of the manual. No pictures or anything
I hate all non Japanese boxes and cases. Seriously, why make the GCN ones so huge? Same for GBA. And the manuals are always worse.
US Saturn cases are a bitch. They will crack in no less than a dozen places if you stare at them too long.
My hated cases are the US Saturn cases. Far too big, heavy and broke so easily. The PlayStation cases that they originally used and the PAL Dreamcast cases. Just like the PS ones, crap! Yakumo
PAL playstation and dreamcast cases, they broke way to easy, didn't fit in any storage unit and where a bitch to replace, also those whopping big plastic usa saturn cases. Seem we are all in agreement on this.
US SegaCD (second series) and Saturn cases! I wish death upon those who created that piece-o-crap! One trip to spain and 5 of the friggin cases got broken, how? they were in a hadbag between a bunch of clothes, yet two got the front and the hinges broken and the other 3 got the back or the front shared.
The Longbox Jewel cases are terrible, yes. Started on SEGA CD, them Saturn and PlayStation. Sony replaced them fast for the cardboard/plastic longbox, and them finally for the normal jewel case cases.
Blu-ray discs. Cases are way too thin and flexible. But the main issue I have is the wrapping they use on them. It sticks to the damn corners like glue! Argh!
That's odd, because the same thing with the wrapping sticking to corners has been happening on the last few XBox 360 games I purchases. Like little thin slivers of cellophane remain stuck to the seams or something. Super annoying.
I hate the PAL DS cases, they're so fucking ugly. P.S. Nintendo still makes their manuals in color Barcode. At least here :/ .
I hate things sealed in the hard plastic bubbles. You know, the kind where you need a freaking chainsaw to open or the strength of an ox to tear open. And whatever is in there flies out due to the amount of force you applied and falls on the floor and breaks! I once got a deep cut because of that type of packaging! They make heavy duty scissors break.
damn, talk about US Nintendo accessories madhatter256. They have that hard plastic, i cut myself once trying to violently open one on xmas one time.
I loathe this packaging as well. Cut myself really bad trying to fish out a new 360 controller from its packaging. But this kind of packaging is a necessary evil these days...too many goddamn thieves in stores. No way in hell someone is going to be able to steal a controller from this type of package without going through some major hassle. I think Dreamcast controllers were the last ones that came in regular old cardboard boxes...I used to laugh whenever I went to Best Buy only to that some of the boxes were empty because some idiot swiped the controller from the box without any issues.
You wouldn't believe the number of times I had to colour in the fold lines of my "first generation" Saturn boxes (PAL) with black marker pen, only for the entire collection to suffer further water damage later on. These days I've stopped caring if my games aren't in pristine condition, as there are very few I'd ever sell anyway - besides, I've seen worse in second hand shops over the years so clearly this style of case must rank quite high in the search for examples of bad design that weren't exactly designed to last... along with most pre-GameCube and GBA inclusive Nintendo packaging, I must add!
Another annoyance is that PSP UMD cases are a fraction of an inch too small for most DVD racks and collapse into a pile of plastic if even a small breeze passes by the rack (if they fit in at all!) OH: I have to give sony props for using regular DVD cases for the PS2 though, durable and easy to replace.
