mmm..i don't really see the what wrong in the plot OOT brought, can you elaborate on this ?

..and we need to remember that it's a legend, so different ''versions'' or alternatives of the whole story can exists, the story doesn't need to be really strong (in the sence of everything is explainable, and in the sence of complex and deep) because of that.

  2. I think you're trying too hard to avoid admitting that Miyamoto and company have lost their stride. The Zelda canon has plot holes in a way that makes Swiss cheese jealous, and deus ex machina like calling the whole thing a 'legend' with different retellings just doesn't fly.

And the problem with OOT's plot is that it was just ANOTHER rehash of what had already been done (and done WELL) in Legend Of Zelda and A Link To The Past. Sure, they added in a few twists - instead of being the menacing blue demon, Ganon was a ridiculous looking person, instead of being raised by his uncle, Link was a little forest elf in a world that would make the Brothers Grimm jealous...

If they had just done the same thing as they did with the Mario series - letting each game stand on its own without trying to tie them all together - it would have been fine. But the laughable attempts at trying to stitch together some sort of continuity have really put me off from the series.

I just don't play games for story. There's a VERY small handful of games that I think have a story interesting enough to warrant buying it on story alone.

Well, if they try to keep them in continuity or not, I still like to play them. Its not the same for other game serie, though, like Wild Arms.

I honestly thought the zelda games relate in story by twos. (kinda like Star Wars does in threes) For example:

Zelda 1+2: same Link, Zelda, Ganon, then 100 years back

Zelda ALTTP + LA: same Link, Zelda, Ganon, then 100 years back

Zelda OOT+ MM: same Link, Zelda, and Ganon

Zelda: MC, FS, FSA: different Links and Zeldas, but same wizard (can't think of name)

Zelda: WW: different Link and Zelda, but same Ganon of OOT. (since in OOT Link return to the Light (past) world, and left Gannondorf in the void of the Dark (future) world)

well.. if I can recall correctly I read in a swedish game mag. not long ago that they had asked Shigeru Miyamoto (or if it was someone else on Nintendo) if there was any connection between the Zelda games and they said that there wasn't any.

I read somewhere that they supposedly fit in the timeline in the middle of Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link. You know, when you get the raft and go from World map 1 to World map 2.

But the timeline has changed since then (This is pre-Wind Waker)

Interesting. I need to play Zelda 2.

  11. See, originally there WAS a continuity: The Legend Of Zelda was the first, and Zelda 2: The Adventure Of Link followed immediately after. According to Nintendo Power and other magazines at the time, A Link To The Past was actually the prequel to Legend Of Zelda, detailing Link's first battle with Ganon. At that point, things were starting to get a little strained with the story. Link's Awakening was supposed to have happened after Zelda 2, with Link taking a trip across the sea for a vacation or whatever it was.

From there, nothing fit anymore. As someone who grew up on the original NES games and Link To The Past, the way the series has devolved into stories about the idea of Link rather than a character have just not sat well with me. Granted, for as action-oriented as the Zelda series is, story doesn't take as huge a part as it would in, say, a Final Fantasy game, but especially with Ocarina Of Time, I just can't shake the feeling through half the game that I've done half of this before years ago, and had a better time doing it as well.

But what I'd like to know is, how come people aren't allowed to say "I thought the art from Wind Waker looked like some retarded Saturday morning cartoon" without being set upon by rabid fanboys? I mean, the artwork was absolutely awful. Games like Jet Grind Radio, Killer 7, XIII, and multiple other games have proved that cel shading can look VERY good, but the Nintendo team must have missed that memo. I guess if I had to pin it down to one thing, I'd say it was the characters themselves that threw me off. Why did everyone have to look so goddamned FELINE?

B/c some people actually are suckers for that "less is more" concept that the Japanese are much better at nailing than the yanks. Me included. Never played Killer 7, but I've played JSR repeatedly, and I think it had much less detail -- that's just me. I still love the game (JSR) though. I like WW as well.
