I really like the new logo when I look at it objectively, but I can't help but hate that it isn't the old one. Conker L&R was excellent. I certainly didn't buy the game for multiplayer. I about died when I first heard they were making Perfect Dark Zero. And then I about died again when I tried to play through it. I think they'll just continue to "make games" from now on, and never make any more legendary titles.
Rare isn't quite the same Rare anymore that is for sure. It's possible that after the 64 era certain key people left and the company did go into a different direction. The new logo suggests they are going to make games more for the casual crowd. Based on Microsoft big unveiling of project natal, I think they are going to be putting some big resources behind it. Here is hoping for killer instinct 3 and not killer instinct natal.
This is sad news. Rare made their name with great hardcore gaming titles like DKC. Their games required some real skill with a controller to complete, yet were simple for a casual gamer to pick up. This move into the controller free market means its going into the shovelware business. Whoever is running the company now has no respect for what came before and what the company was built on, exceptional games for dedicated and casual gamers. I just don't think you can make a good hardcore gaming title without a controller of some kind.
Sure, but a game that gets a 9/10 should be pretty damn good...and I just can't see anyone thinking of PDZ as anything other than average at best. Killer Instinct was OK, I guess. A lot of people from the Goldeneye/PD days already left the company a long time ago. I guess we know who the talented people in Rare were.
I bought the Viva Pinata sequel and they fucked it up lol- played for a bout an hour and haven't touched again.
I actually didn't mind Perfect Dark Zero (still have my copy around somewhere), but I still hate Rare for their part in NXE (it was basically their idea). Was there really a need for Avatar360? The original blades dashboard was just fine, and I still find the original easier to get to where I want.
I still hate NXE. Maybe that's because I don't own a 360. Just seem convoluted in comparison to having everything right there in front of you.
"The studio’s creative director George Andreas will speak in a session called ‘The Future IS Controller-Free Games and Entertainment’." please no... the one nice thing that i keep holding on to is that even if the future of gaming goes down the tubes, i've got over 20 years of great gaming of which i have barely scratched the surface. all is not lost.
Viva Pinata was like crack if you got into it though. I've never been so concerned with not getting the candy out of a pinata before. Also, I agree with alecjahn, NXE makes it much more tricky to actually find what you're looking for. It does make you wade through way more advertising for stuff on the marketplace, however. I know when I wanna go delete some saved games and stuff, I want to hear all about Boom Blox or whatever is out now.
There is no advertising on the 'My Xbox' strip where you would page right to access System Settings and then Memory. I like the advertising, it helps me discover games I have not heard of. I also think it is very easy to find what you want. The blade system was cluttered and horrible, and the marketplace navigation there was a clusterfuck.
The new logo makes sense business - wise, but I think it looks awful by a design standpoint. It's not intrusive, it's just generic.
Rare has been a developer thats always interested me. They go through so many changes and ideas when creating a game and I bet some of them we never even got to see. I would really enjoy taking a look round their studio and seeing what secrets they have inside.
I thought Rare did a fine job with their 360 games. I really enjoyed Perfect Dark Zero (especially online, playing Infection was awesome), Kameo (especially Kameo), and Banjo and Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts. Never played the Viva Pinata stuff though.
Rare need to take the tech and assets of Nuts and Bolts and spew out a proper platformer in a year. Kameo is Rare's best game in years imo.
