I was reading some stories about the new ps3 model. Supposedly it has a changed optical drive, as sony could save a ton of money per unit if they went with a flip top design. It could also be a tray system but sony seems to prefer a flip top arrangement. What do you think about a ps3 with a flip top?
I know I saw 5 in Hard Off today On topic, I think if it's true then a flip top would be a pretty good move to get that price down. It could also improve on the ugly beast. Yakumo
It could be true, but I dont see how that could make it any cheaper, seeing theres practically no fliptop drives anymore, just the PStwo and some GCs (are discmans made anymore?). But if it does make the PS3 cheaper they could release a fliptop version for like $400 and get some extra sales. They dont even need to change the case that much, the PS3 already has the shape of a old fliptop, like the 3DO Fz-10...
Another excuse to see the PS3 Grill. ^_^ As for a flip top, it would make the drive cheaper as it wouldn't have to have all the gubbins to pull and eject the disc and would probably be more realiable... Still for a fliptop machine I would expect the price to drop to around Y30000 or less...
The ps3 grill is nothing compared to the Acorn Rocketship I don't like flip-top much, it's so easily breakable...
Dammit I didnt thought about the boomboxs, those are all fliptop... The point is: would a fliptop drive be cheap enough to really make a decent cut in PS3's MSRP? or would just help reduce the costs for sony but not the retail price?
Right, it's wouldn't unless it was part of a large number of changes (AKA PSTwo). I don't reckon the PS3 architecture will see size reductions/component economies enough to reduce the case in scale before 2009 and just adding a flip top on the current case would be hideous. It would be an abomination!
Anything they can do to reduce cost without affecting functional quality is great. Honestly I wouldn't care if it looked like crap as long as it was more affordable and built decently.
Am I the only one that likes the very first version with the EE chip inside? I like my stuff to be pompus
Indeed, althought sony could release it at say, $450 and then release the new 80GB SKU (with all the bells and whistles) at $700, so if you want to play, you get the lowend, or else you gotta pay, and sony gets the benefits. It would be bad for the consummer no doubt, but in the logic of a corporate CEO is a good solution to stop the cash hemorrhage...
Nope! You have company there! Besides which, for that price, it'd better look & be pompous! Trying to get the costs down would be logical, but given that Sony has been positioning the thing as at least a very top-end gaming system & also something of an entertainment hub for the living room, I don't think a flip-top fits well with that. I'd also be suprised if a move to flip-top on it's own, is going to make that great of a change to the overall cost to build - it would be more significant on an already mature & relatively cheap system, like the the PS2->PS2Two. I'd expect more internal simplification, like board revs with reduced IC counts to happen first. I just wish it ran a bit cooler - it can get as warm as, well... a PS3-grill ;-) when playing Blu-ray movies...
- Slot loaders rub dirt and dust on your disc each time you load and eject. - Fliptops are often flimsy plastic constructions and are prone to collect dust inside as you expose the lens and drive assembly. In all, I prefer a tray loader which has the least of the above problems. Also, in my book the durability of slot loaders is very poor. From personal experience I know they just barely last past the warranty period.
Ah, but on tray loaders the belts die eventually. Flip top is the longest wearing from a collector's POV I suppose.
