I can understand why Square Enix would be a little irked at somebody blatantly stealing their copyright. It's sucks that they wouldn't buy it or something, though. I guess it's not very surprising, though.

Honestly as nice as the game looks (I think really because of some impressive modeling), I don't think it's anywhere near up to par with an official remake that Squaresoft could put out and I kind of doubt the game's framework is anything that they would want to purchase judging by the homebrewiness.

so, what's the real reason they haven't revisited the franchise despite demand?

    sorta like Super Mario RPG.

I definetly agree, Square is making a bad decesion here. If you think about it, its a game that they own the property to, that when it's finished they could probably pick it up for peanuts (i.e. under a million dollars, if even that) and that would probably generate revenues in the millions.

Seeing how games today have budgets that are quickly approaching those of third world countries it seems like a good deal to get one of such quality for virutally free. The most they'd have to spend would probably a few months to QA it for bugs.

Man, I think Square-Enix are FOOLS for not hiring these guys or buying the project from them.

Also, its probably not too late for them to make this come out, because IMHO, it still looks pretty good. But I bet by now the team has probably lost interest.

I don't believe so. From what I remember they had only planned to recreate their favorite or most memorable scenes. I could be wrong, I've never played the original(I know, I know. One of these days I'll get to it) so I didn't follow this too closely. I was still looking forward to it to some extent, had hoped it would have been leaked by someone "not" connected to the team.;-)

Yeah, that's was the way they planned the game.
You can see this in the newest released video aswell.
The game started and there was a time warp to one of the battles. After you finished this battle you would probably be warped to another key scene... etc.
I would really like to get my dirty hands on this game...
