I have been considering the AV mod for my toploader, however, I am not a fan of the separate jacks being drilled through the case. I would much rather have a single headphone jack feeding video and audio out the back. I have two questions. Does this cause any interference to have the audio and video so close together on the same jack? If I wanted to do no alterations to the case, could I remove something unnecessary, like the rf plug to fit it in?
There are those TRRS sockets which you can hook up video and stereo or if you're going for the Mono setup a TRS socket will do and you could use the RF hole to mount it on. You can also go for a replacement socket of the back *(Shameless plug)* here: http://assemblergames.com/l/threads/f-s-nes-top-loader-snes-style-multi-a-v-socket.50494/
Yes, you could remove the RF easily, just remove it from the board. You then only need to install a female jack for the below plug. You can get what look like stereo jacks but have 4 sections rather than 3 as you get with stereo jacks; that would be ideal (composite, right audio, left audio and ground). No interference, after all the cable is grounded.
Useless info: NES never officially supported stereo. You can still use mono sound. Stereo hack for some games may sound odd.
if looking for the actual parts, they are called TRRS jacks Tip ring ring sleeve Stereo headphone jacks are TRS Tip Ring Sleeve Mono are TS jacks Tip sleeve and the more uncommon TRRRS and higher then just pick the diameter, 2.5mm, 3.5mm and 6.35mm
I think its just easier going online and finding the right chip and av Mod.Then unfortunatly you do need to install it into your top loader and drill thru your console. It quite honestly doesnt hurt your toploader by doing that.I take my nes's to a good friend of mine who modifies consoles for cheap and thats how she gets it done.
