I never knew that I'd be OK with this. I like how Cloud's regular design seems to be more classical based (especially the 90s anime hair), and his moveset looks interesting. The Midgar stage also looks like it's gonna be a blast to play. But this has certainly got to be the most curveball character for a Smash game, by far. And probably the most salt generating character too. So many people are pissed, just because he had a minimal Nintendo presence (never mind the fact that this could mean some real Nintendo presence for Cloud in the future like, say, FF7 on the NX). But question is, who the fuck better to represent Final Fantasy?
But why? I would be very surprised if Final Fantasy VII HD comes to the NX, but even Nintendo would screw that up. Best Buy has eShop cards for 10% off BTW.
Looks like a re-skinned adult Link but I suppose that is not a totally fair assessment based on a short video. I missed the FF7 music for sure but anyone from FF5 or 6 could have been better because Cloud was an overrated dick.
Maybe VII will head to 3DS there were rumors of a DS FFVII back in the day. Maybe there will be an NX VII Assuming the NX is powerful enough and not the next replacement for their portables.
I don't really like Cloud much, either. Really overrated FF character. Then again I loved Squall, enjoyed Eiko and wasn't super irritated by Tidus, so who am I to say.
I would really love Wakka as a playable character. What am I saying, John Dimaggio is great in anything.
I would preferred Tifa, Lulu, or Riku but meh Cloud. Nintendo need to do more like character packs, a character, here, there and wherever they like isn't enough for me to play Smash again.
I think the thing that threw me is that he's the only character I can think of that's not really associated with a Nintendo console. I mean, even Sonic's recent games have been on the Wii and Wii U, Pac-Man's had numerous appearances on various Nintendo platforms, millions of copies of SFII were sold for the SNES (probably), and Mega Man has been lumped in with Nintendo icons since the 80s, but Cloud was in a couple portable games, and that's really it.
I love how some people across the Internet are absolutely unable to see this for the obvious marketing move it is. But seriously, one way you could look at this is as a spitefully gleeful middle finger, from Masahiro Sakurai to Sony. "Oh, you're not gonna add what should be the easiest and most popular character from your consoles to Playstation All-Stars? Fuck you, we'll take him then."
Regardless of people's opinions on the character, the attention to detail in his implementation is sublime what with the limit breaks and summons. Even Square-Enix haven't honoured the character as much as the devs have here, the nostalgia factor is unprecedented.
Cecil, Kain, Edge, Golbez, Locke, Celes, Terra, Mog, Shadow, Sabin, Warrior of Light, Kefka, and Chaos are the ones that immediately come to mind.
Half of those are side characters or villains. The other half are nowhere near as engrained in JRPG fans' minds as Cloud is. Sorry you don't like him, but to say that anyone before FF7 best represents Final Fantasy (except MAYBE a Moogle) is just biased as hell.
I've played and loved every FF game from FF1 to FF9, plus a little 13, and FF7 is one of my faves but not my favourite, but Cloud is still head and shoulders above others as an iconic character. That doesn't necessarily mean he's a better, more interesting, or more rounded character than others, though.
Really couldn't care less about the mainstream kiddies who came to the series with 7. Speaking as someone who actually grew up with FF (that is, I was a fan before the travesty that was VII and the crap that followed), it always disgusts me when someone points to lame ass Cloud (or Sephiroth) as the face of the franchise. Beyond that, it's just disappointing that they aren't using a classic N Generation character.
I just hope that we get Chocobos and Mages as assist trophies. And let's not forget that half of the I-VI games didn't get original releases in the US, and none of them got original releases in PAL regions. VII was the first game to come to Europe. And at this point, it's almost 20 years old, people who came into it aren't exactly "kiddies" anymore. At least they didn't put in Titus, we have enough annoying Smash characters already.
So, mainly IV and VI? Those would be more fitting, considering they were II and III in the US. I would have loved to see Terra. Honestly Cecil would have been the coolest, considering he could have transformed to a Paladin like Zelda changes to Sheik.
Not that it matters now but earlier I meant 4 and 6, not 5 and 6 although any representation is better than none at all. The boss music from 4 is really catchy and would work well in a smash bros game as much as I would prefer from 6. The FF7 limit break smash moves are a good idea but how much more badass would it be to see some magitek armor stomping around?
