Sorry, but you're not the centre of the Universe. Even as a fan of the pre-7 games, Cloud is the best-known character by far. And it's weird you blast 'mainstream kiddies' when Smash is a mainstream kids' game. (damn good one of course)
NEWS FLASH:not all of us grew up with 7 (i in fact grew up with 10 myself),it's just considered the best in the series NEWS FLASH:not every Nintendo mascot was created in the 80's,just embrace the fact that your getting older you manchild
I have always considered Final Fantasy IV to be the template for all other games in the series. It has everything that a true Final Fantasy needs to have, in some form or another. Final Fantasy VII is fantastic, but it is a poor representation of the series as a whole. Cecil would have been the better character for Smash, in my opinion. Also, I have a very hard time believing that anyone is "too young" to know who he is, since FFIV has been ported to an absurd number of platforms by now. Despite all that, it's hilarious that Cloud is now in Smash Bros and not Playstation All-Stars.
NEWS FLASH: It's only considered the "best" by people who didn't have any freakin' clue what FF was prior to VII. That was my point. I have no idea what this means. I assume you don't understand what I mean by "N Generation", which is a reference to Final Fantasy as a franchise on Nintendo consoles, as opposed to the S Generation which is a reference to Final Fantasy as a franchise on Sony consoles. The nomenclature comes from two soundtracks that came out from Squaresoft back in the late 90s (or early 00s). By the way, it's "you're", not "your". Sure, he's the best known, but he's not a very good representation of FF in general, and especially not FF on Nintendo consoles. Why use the second lamest FF main character (behind Tidus) who was never on your console when you could use one of the most badass (Cecil) who was? As for the mainstram kiddies remark, that'll always be how I think of folks who came to FF with VII regardless of age. At the time it was bizarre how my class went from "no one knows what the hell a moogle is" to yappin' about lame ass Cloud and Sephiroth all the time. That said, I wouldn't have cared had VII not been such a terrible game compared to VI and IV. FF had been so good to that point... then it became all emo and whiney with terrible characters and painfully convoluted nonsensical plots. IX kinda went back in the right direction, but that game was just boring. Regardless, the point still stands: Cloud has never been on a Nintendo console, so he's a poor choice to represent FF on a console that once exclusively housed the FF franchise. Especially when you consider that the "sequel" to FF IV was exclusive to the Wii for a while.
I agree with this, but for different reasons. I didn't mind the "emo" and "whiney." FF VII just felt over-simplified and IMO quite boring. Compared to IV and especially VI, it's a slogfest. Besides Tifa and Yuffie none of the characters are particularly likeable, the Materia system is uninspired and watered down, it was the beginning of overly long summon animations AKA style over substance, and the graphics are rather ugly, even for the time. At least VIII has the deep, rewarding junction system and IX has the throwback attitude with some of series most likeable characters (Vivi, anyone?) Actually, the more I think about it, why not Vivi for Smash? Just ignore him. How he's still able to post on here is beyond me. Spewing vitriol per usual.
I can agree with that. I still hated how whiney Cloud was, but yeah, the characters in VII were painfully one dimensional, especially when you hold them up against the casts of IV and VI (both of which, IMO, feature the best FF casts of all time, and each for different reasons). Now that I think about it, it's actually the lack of believable character development that makes me dislike the later FF games (well, that and the stories/villains; after Kefka I feel like Square never really nailed the villains in those games; I know some will point to Sephiroth, but he always reeked of "trying too hard" to me). I think IV was the pinnacle (nothing can compare to Cecil's growth as a person and his quest for redemption, nothing), but seeing how everyone changed in the World of Ruin in VI was also incredibly done.
For me, VI is the best FF game. I don't think they'll ever be able to top it. I personally loved VIII as well. VI an VIII are pretty much tied for me, although I know VI is a far better game. I can't name a single character I didn't like in VI, which is indicative of how well Square did considering there are what, 13 characters?
It is kind of a weird choice for Smash Bros, but Snake seemed like a weird choice when Brawl came out. On the other hand, at least Snake was on a Nintendo console in the form of Twin Snakes. My guess is that they're going to release the FFVII remake on the Wii U.
WAY TO MAKE ME FEEL OLD Cloud was just in Theatrythum and FF Explorers on the 3DS, he's been in more non-VC games on the 3DS than Mega Man has.
I loved IV and VI, and enjoyed VII and IX. I dunno but VIII just didn't work for me. The Junction System was okay I guess, but the 'drawing' of magic was just a slog. I got pretty far into V but I got hopelessly stuck on some super-high-levelled island with no escape, which was annoying. Fun game though.
And outside of the 3DS Mega Man has starred in how many games on Nintendo machines? Also, every single character I listed (except Shadow and Sabin) was also in at least one of the Theatrhythm games. And at least Cecil and Terra are in FF Explorers as well (it hasn't come out in the US yet so I don't know who else is in it, they were mentioned in the Direct though).
Would have loved to see the Black Mage in this instead of Cloud, it would make a lot more sense and have some opportunities to do something new with the character's moves.
My inner child went all happy during the reveal as now I can have a fight between Mario, Sonic, Mega Man, Pac Man, Ryu, and Cloud. My adult side went "Oh look, another Ike."
