I have a server at home with 6tb of storage but no backups (some really important small stuff is backed up) I was in Japan recently and noticed how cheap BDR has become, I was originally wanting to go with tape becuase it would be a fun experience and the os is generally used in that way (windows server) From what I understand, tape would be batter becuase it’s rewritable and has a better shelf life? Cons would be cost (unless I go with an older type and use more tape What option should I go with?
Have you considered setting up a RAID array for your drives? Buy a cheap HP Microserver (approx £150) , install Xpenology on a USB stick (free) and use the internal USB to mount it, you can then install 4x HDD's in the Hot Swap Bays and setup RAID. Thats the way I have gone personally, also you can look at Cloud storage as thats becoming more affordable by the day. Tape is still highly regarded for doing backups but I am personally not a fan as i've had a few issues in the past with tapes no longer being readable, but also had the same with backups on CDR/DVDR and I dont see how BDR would be much different.
Tape and fun don't really go together. There is an obvious learning curve, and access is troublesome. It's an investment in time as much as it is in money to really get the most from it. Stick to formats that you can easily manage and maintain.
BDR discs have a 25GB capacity. Write speed is 6x, or 27.6 megabytes a second. You would need 240 discs. It would take 15.1 minutes to write each disc. 2.52 days of nonstop, full speed writing to make a backup. EDIT: just saw your 'raid is not backup' tag. I guess go with tape.
didnt notice the 'raid is not a backup' tag but just to say that RAID is a backup if set to duplicate 1:1 - that is the essence of a backup, having a complete copy of the data, when running something like Raid 5 - then yes I can see your point. I would certainly be using a RAID array before burning a ton of blurays so your only option you have left is the cloud or tape and for yourself i would probably suggest tape.
I wouldn't bother with the tapes, they are slow and painful. Ideally you want RAID10 on the current server, if too expensive go RAID1. You also want to have a off-site backup If you want to be creative you can go glusterfs replica volume with ctdb for file locking to automatically replicate files but you need at least two nodes and an arbiter It all comes down to money in the end
raidz2 ftw, but still, /upvote "If you want to be a special snowflake you can go ̷̧͔͙̣͚̲̙̉͊̉̇͜͠͝͞ͅa̧̩͓̙͔̫̰̘̐̓̃̉̓͋̔ͅr͚̖̳̜̫̘̭͍̯̗̔̎̇̇̐͡d̪̺̦̪͈͓̭̤͗͋̆̋͒̃̓͞͠ͅe̵̞͖͇̝̪͕̾̅͋̀̊̅̽͐̿͛ t̷̢̗̘̩̥̣̤͌̍̾̈̌̋̎̉̽͜ơ̶͈̤̝̗͇͓̲̯̓̏̂̅͋͗̾̾ͅr̡̘͚͇̮̖̿̊̊̐̓ with i̷̙̖̭͓͍͂͐͌̈͋́͡͡͠ȯ̼̱̮̣̠̬̤̑̑̽̈͟͟ẉ̛͈̰̹̂̆̐̀͛͒̑̌͆͢a̷̢͔̺͉̜̐̅̀̽̊t for ņ̢̡̺̬͎̹̫̜̦̔̽̑̀̓d̸͚͚̠͇͉̾͑̓͊̓o̸̢̳̱̼̩̙͔͊̄̍̓͐͂̽͘͘͞ř̨͉̟͈͖̳̬̪̼̃̓́͛͆ to automagically ͕ĥ̶̡̜͇̹̮̪͇̥̎̊̐́͡ȩ̧̛̣͈̫̝̩̀̉̀͒̋̍r̝̱̟̭͓̦̿͒̒̐͜͠t̴̨̡̫͕̙͇̞͐̊̊̀́̎̇̀̅͢͜t but you need at least two unicorn cervixes and an ̸͉̤̞̫̦͆̇̎̓̄̆̑́ě̜͚̥͓͚̜͎̦̬̄̐́̎͡ę̛̘͉͚͉̮̟̖͎͗̓̐̓͂͟͝d̴̤̼̲̹̖̳͒̓̊̐͠͝ ǎ̻͔̟̪̟́̾͋̚͜ţ̷̨̝̝̼̼͎̬̄̾̆͑̋͆o̶̡̩̗̲̩͑̊́̉̕͠u̙̝̯̳͙͛̎͛̔̀̕s̴̡͔͙͍͇̥̀̽̃̽̀͛̑̅̕͟͠e̷̗̬͇͈̼̜̅̌̄̇͋̀̓̚͟c." Dude. Don't overcomplicate things. Raid + rsync, or something along those lines, and done.
Well that’s the thing, it’s more to compliment my hobby. Tapes have always fascinated me, Plus cost per gigabyte is a little nicer in the long run
Cloud is a bit err, I’d rather pay for the hardware than pay a monthly fee. My internet isn’t good either.. What lto type where you using, since lto 3 there has been the WORM feature, it increases the life by making the tape single write
I honestly cant remember its a good few years ago now, however in the end I think we figured out the problem was down to the humidity in the room where the tapes had been stored, it had essentially started to disintegrate the tapes and we got multiple read-errors constantly, in the end we gave up and used local backups (made by users themselves) to restore 90% of the data, the other 10% was gone and the work had to be done again - some unhappy people that day.
