Commercial Genesis game in development!

Discussion in 'Rare and Obscure Gaming' started by Greatsaintlouis, Jun 12, 2005.

  1. No, not an officially licensed one by Sega, but apparently Beggar Prince (http://www.beggarprince.com/) will be distributed by OlderGames once it is completed. No concrete release date yet, but the website gives the indication of it being close to completion. The game looks to be similar to many of the classic Genesis RPGs we all enjoyed, and I for one am looking forward to it!

    Wow, that was unexpected!
Hopefully this will open the door to more Genesis cart releases in the future...if a system like the Atari 2600 still sees new releases periodically, so should the 16bit systems!

Let's just hope it isn't prohibitively expensive.

  4. Probably just $80-100 like Genesis RPGs always were when they came out.

By the way, has anyone here played that Mighty Mighty Missile game that GoodDealGames released last year for the Sega CD? It's a ChuChu Rocket clone (one of my favorite puzzle games ever) and looks like a very slick job. Someone I know from another board has an extra copy that he was gonna give me, but I don't even have a Sega CD anymore (and don't dig PC emulation too much...if only there was a Sega CD emulator on the Dreamcast). Still looks cool, though.

It has to be expensive. Two 2Mx8 ROMs together costs around $25, Four 1Mx8 is $20 in bulk, one 2Mx16 ROM is nearly $30 but extremely hard to buy.

  7. Oh, hehe, I was just kidding when I said $80-100. You guys really think it will be so expensive? I was assuming more like $50, which would seem reasonable to me. Maybe even less depending on how they handle the packaging.

they used to cost that, though. The Phantasy Star games were almost 100 dollars, right?

Not in the US. I sure can't recall a single game costing more than $70 ($69.99)

Things to be considered concerning this game: price of packaging, cartridge casing, PCB, PROMs, SRAM, battery.

    Dragon Force: $82.00 :D

  11. Phantasy Star IV was definitely $100 in the U.S. when it released. (So was Virtua Racing, but that shouldn't count I guess.) And then some of the other RPGs including Phantasy Star II were $80 and I think Shining Force 2 was $90. I didn;t buy any of them, but I remember those prices. And that $70 price point you mention was actually like the usual price for new games.

Speaking of this, anyone else here remember how much import games used to cost back then? $100-200 was quite common for desirable imports. Ain't we livin' good today?

I have some *old* magazine articles that show the prices of games, and some of them were quite expensive in retail.

Why were RPGs and Virtual Racing more in the US? The UK versions weren't that much more than standard games and neither were the Japanese versions. That just seems strange.

PS: Just noticed that I've played that RPG before in Chinese :D I remember it looking very nice.

This is very interesting, and certainly gives hope for the future :)
I wonder if they asked for some sort of aquiescence on Sega's part?

Exactly. Both VR and PS4 retailed around $99 upon release. I still remember paying $69.99 for Phantasy Star II back in 1990...it was worth it and you got that cool hint book shrinkwrapped to the back of the package! Phantasy Star III also sold for $69.99 at release. Also, all the Final Fantasy 2 and 3 for the SNES both clocked in at $69.99 and stayed that way for many years.

I remember it all too well! ;)
$59.99 to $100+ for imports during the 16-bit era were not uncommon prices to pay. You had to pay the money to be among the first to play the hot games like Strider for the MD and Actraiser for the Super Fami :) ! Prices started to become a little more reasonable with the launch of the 32-bit systems though.

I remember looking at the Die Hard Games Fan add on the back of the US magazine and always wondered how the hell they could charge 99 USD for shite like Saliormoon on the Famicom. Now of course I understand that 99 USD wasn't really that much or not compared to what we inthe UK had to pay ! I remember paying 67 pounds for Axelay, 69 pounds for Turtles in Time, 55 pounds for Alisa Dragoon on the Mega Drive and many other silly prices. Still, back then it was cool to have all the latest Japanese imports with their great art work. These days it's not half the fun. Probably because I'm much older now :(

Virtua racing was the most expensive ever, at $120.

You can imagine it didn't sell well.

That's why every time I see a cart I just buy it. Getting a $120 game for $1 seems
    so ironic to me.
