Having woken up to yet more terrible news from Greece, I just thought it was about time a thread was created as a means of support & sympathy for the few Greek members we have. At present the number of people killed in Greece's worst forest fires in living memory stands at an incredible 60! My guess is that this figure will sadly increase. In one terribly sad incident a young mother and her four children were burned alive whilst fleeing the flames that threatened her village. Sadly, had she remained in her own home they would have probably survived as her house was untouched. I hope that none of the members here are affected by these incidents.
Here Here... I sent Pitsunami a PM a couple of days ago but havent heard anything.. hope all is well...
Yeah, what is happening in Greece is horrible, and Denmark has sent help too, to help fighting the fires.
Kyrie Eleison, I hope all forum members and their friends and families are safe from the fires. I know out in the Greek countryside things can be pretty remote and wild fires are fast and deadly. It's good to see the EU pulling its finger out and providing assistance for once too.
The saddest thing about this whole thing is that the fires are caused by man. What people will do for elections/profit.. sick.
I kind of doub they'll be able to get away with it this time though. No way they'd allow any of the burned area to be used for construction, or the politicians allowing it would be slaughtered.
They may have no choice. A great many properties have already been consumed by fire and once those buildings are re-built, it would seem rather a mute point to argue about letting other parcels of land be utilised. However, the fires being set to assist (speed up) development of building lands was just one theory. Seems very plausable however.
it happens every single year. People do it on purpose for building houses and properties that would otherwise be deemed "forest areas". Greece is a very rocky place and vagetations isn't lush - putting fires further destroys this delicate ecosystem endagaring species of animals as well. It really breaks one's heart to see this happen to any part of the world. Elections are comming soon too, and it might act as a political lever to change government by the opposition. They could have easily paid some people to do it.
Thanks guys for all your thoughts about my country. I live at a very rocky place that has no trees at all ,only bushes but they cant built on rocks so they leave us alone here. Pictures of the disaster is seen only in movies and its really heartbreaking for a forestlover like me to see our few forest to be destroyed by people that only care about their positions and their bank accounts. For the first time i think there may be a chance to find who is guilty but i doubt that...:-( :-(
Barc0de: I have just read here. That the greeks has said no to the Danish help, and played the "thank you, you are going to the island of Evia to help stop the fires" and then they got sent to Athens where they said they didn´t need the help. And then the Danish fire chief Sten Skov from Firexpres has said "it is typical South European bureaucracy" , and other stuff. So What The Hell is going on ?
LOL, not a laughing matter, but you make it sound like Barc0de had a personal hand in the matter. Damn it man, get it sorted Barc0de!!!
This is terrible and even worse when it is someone who does this becuase although i have no idea the reason that someone had for doing this i think starting a fire which has killed 60 people so far and gotten out of control is a stupid thing to do no matter what may have happened . i hope the person who started these fires comes forward, own up or be found so they can get what they deserve.
We've got some fires in Italy as well - keep on going and fuck those a$$ holes the hardest you can! >_<
