Everything seems to be working. Drive opens and closes ok. Am I supposed to let it boot normal then log onto root? What would be the reason that it wouldn't connect? I am using a retail game if that may have something to do with it.

Yes, you need to reset the password, let it boot normal.

Log in, then log in as ROOT

Go to the directory, then run desdb with a disc in the drive.

What does it mean that it "cannot connect" after running the command? Would it be a hardware issue?

It means that the PC side can't find the PS2 side. You'll need to re-seat the boards. It's happened to mine a lot.

That or it's set to workstation and not tool, it's the other switch with the dvd/emu switch.

What exactly do you mean by re-seat? Open it up and reconnect all the cables?

No I mean all the boards. The PC card, the PCMCIA card the 2 smaller cards.

I get a cannot connect because my boards are stuffed I think.
I've pulled it apart more times than I can remember, and it still won't work for me.

Please don't confuse superspeed, we know your tool is sadly dead...

What you can do superspeed is power it off, unplug it and then try to turn it on
    and discharge the power.

Thern take the two screws off the side with the drive, and slide it towards the front, lift up and off.

Remove the screws along the edge and take a peek inside. If the pc card was moved
out of the slot he wouldn't have pc host connection, so I am sure if it won't connect it is either
login issue, or it was terminally damaged in shipping (worst case scenario)

I most definitely am not trying to confuse him. I was just meerly trying to point out that may be the trouble.

Ok so here's what I've done since I got the unit. @ the Lilo prompt I typed in "tool single" then at the bash I typed passwd root then changed the password. Then after resetting the unit without pressing anything until asked for login root as the login ID and then entered my new password. I then am at root and I typed in "cd /usr/local/sce/bin" enter and then "./dsedb -r reset 2 100" enter and it says cannot connect.

Are you sure that you're in the right directory??

Would you mind typing "ls" (without qoutes) after you enter the bin directory??

Only because, to me it looks you're not. cd ../usr/local/sce/bin/ (don't forget the dot dot before the first / )

tried it with both with the .. and without. both ways take me to the bin dir but it won't connect. I opened the side that has the drive on it and on the pci card there is a empty slot it there something thats supposed to be in it? I believe it's just a memory slot. PCI-815VE is the card type and there doesn't seem to be anything out of place.

I don't know about the TOOL, but when there's no memory in a computer it won't connect to anything. Try and pull the PC card out and then put it back in, this may fix the problem. Also, a photo may help other members find the problem for you.

There's no RAM in that slot.

Also isn't that the better version of the card for the TOOL?

Yes that is the better version from what I've read and there is RAM on the card the open slot is a extra stot that you can add more. If you look under the white wire you will notice the RAM chip. This is the first time the unit has been opened the copper around the edges was still intact and the seal on the back as well. The last person to have the unit was the original owner of it.
