    Hey peeps-

I had an old GBA with a bad screen and decided to turn it into a console rather than fix the screen. Its took about 3 months of occasional tinkering and messing around.

Enoy and sorry for the blurry video.

    Thanks!

Its a marriage of an old psone case and the back case of the gba I used for the mod. Lots of ABS glue, epoxy, filler, sanding, and paint later....

Nice mod, I always felt the Gameboy Player didn't give perfect gameplay

    That looks really good! :)

I was considering doing this myself, and I do have an Innovation TV-out adapter here, that I modded for RGB, but I just don't like what it outputs. For starters it stutters more than the GameCube gameboy player, and second it's in 480i. Did you manage to address any of these issues when building your console? :) 240p would be so awesome :)

must've been absolutely furious with handhelds to put the effort into that gem? (i can relate, big-screen is where it's at)
    really good work, nice! :smile-new:

Did you directly wire the GBA to the adapter or are you using the clip on piece that it came with? Directly wiring makes a big difference but of course it a lot more work.

I wired it directly. I couldn't get the clip to work at all :)

But it has nothing to do with the stutter or output resolution ;)

I too use an XRGB-mini, but it found that the deinterlacing looked really bad regardless of the mode I used on the XRGB.

EDIT: Well I shouldn't say bad, as the XRGB does really good deinterlacing for video game content. But compared to how good native 240p would look, there's a huge difference.

Yeah, I know it doesn't have anything to do with output res and the stutter I thought you were referring to was possibly the adapter losing sync with the GBA-probably due to the shit clip they give you, lol.

What settings are you using for the GBA when you have it go to your XRGB mini? I get a very shaky image when I use meister mode but other than that, just the occasional stutter. As for resolution, I have no idea how I could go about fixing that.

I'm using the Movie mode for 480i, but once things start to move around the image gets very blurry. Picture mode looks amazing on the mini, if I recall correctly, but you get horrible interlacing with even the slightest movement. I wish the Mini had a 480i > 240p feature :)

I have no idea how to fix the resolution either. There are Extron devices that can convert 480p to 240p, but I'm not sure about 480i. As for the stuttering, that might be possible to improve, but I haven't got the slightest idea how to even begin.

Just in case anyone is wondering how the Innovation TV-out adapter compares to the GameCube Gameboy Player, here is a few shots I took using both of them. Should really show the difference quite well, and it's obvious that the TV-out adapter looks a million times better, but when there's motion I do actually prefer the Gameboy Player :(

    GameCube Gameboy Player:

The Innovation adapter is connected to my XRGB-mini using RGB and 480i resolution. The GameCube Gameboy Player was connected with either component or VGA (modded cable) in 480p, and hooked up to either my Gefen VGA to DVI scaler plus, or the Optoma HD3000. I can't remember which one, but I used the one that looked the best. Besides the XRGB-mini doesn't do 480p very well.

Great job! I have wondered before what it would look like if you made a console from a handheld.
