just from a legal standpoint, if Microsoft sells/pays another company to dispose of retired devkits. Do they still legally belong to Microsoft? Is this fall under standard dumpster diving? Once you throw it away anyone can 'find' it?

There are sites where you can by retired 360 devkits with the connectors in back physically broken, but could be repaired with parts most people probably have laying around from old units/pc's etc..

I'm curious If you bought one, fixed it, and genuinely planned to avoid P-net, could you use it to debug without worrying about Microsoft nuking your devkit, or would you have to set up a closed local network?

edit:(you could get 3 or 4 of them for less than the cost of a secondhand working unit.)

edit2: not trying to start junk threads, I suppose even if you did legally own it at that point, you still would not have license to the software.

Thats how most kits were obtained till the stress tests were pushed out in the grey market. The origins on those are kind of shady but most of the xenon's you find are actual dumpster trash which is why my first two xenon kits failed till I decided to dish out the cash for a nice kit with a little help from a friend of course. However the software still belongs to microsoft and it is underlined that you can not use a kit legally without being under an NDA I believe .

Most times the terms are for them to be scrapped.

If they send them as waste with no terms, then it's no longer ms property.

The problem is that there's no way of telling what kind of kit you will get. And if there were any problems and you needed to communicate back with the seller to discus refunds etc. Sounds like a giant clusterfuck if you ask me

Hrm, buy - don't buy, dev - don't dev, a Jedi thinks not of these things..

Anyone have pointers for sidecar removal?

EDIT: You buy from taobao through an agent if you're in America, like http://taobaofocus.com/order and use Paypal

that will be helpful once i get it off the unit, those broken tabs in the pics at that link are what I don't want to do. You know how the two gray end pieces fit on a retail? The sidecar looks like it fits like that but doesn't come off nearly as easily.

I might have to order a PSU from taobao so I'll let you know..

I picked up this one from a private source, with no guarantee of its condition, showed up looking mint with a sidecar on it. Gambled and won.

that translates to "these kits have been xclamped and will probably break down pretty soon". I dont think it has anything to do with pnet bricks

Yeah, they said the same thing to me

I emailed them about buying one and they sent me a spread sheet of the cost of shipping and stuff, and it ran to like $140 after shipping.

I think its fine, people you guys are complaining they break down, but jesus for 140 dollars would you really care that much...

This find potentially allows me to fix my bricked kit for alot less money.
