So I am driving myself crazy trying to pick out a default controller to use with the Raspberry Pi Emulation box I'm building.

I've considered Wii Classic controller Pro, The Logitech controllers that look super uncomfortable, an XBOX One Controller until I found out they're a pain in the ass to get working in Retropie, This thing ,This other thing
something always seems off a Friend suggested this, Then I found this but that d-pad looks huge and clunky. This looked promising but I don't know if it'll work. So at the end of my rope, I may as well ask the obscure forum..about what unique looking but functional controller I should pick up as my default. I do have Adapters and PS2/Genesis/SNES and arcade sticks out the ass I could use, but I want a controller that looks unique.

    Any ideas?

Xbox 360 is your best option.

I do have a few 360 pads floating around too and there is no shortage of unique looking 360 controllers. It's just finding one with a decent D-pad

    What's wrong with the 360 d-pad?

They're notorious for being bad for pretty much everything that requires directional input.

Works great for me, especially for fighting games.

never did for me, not until the Special edition, I have one of those lying around but no idea if it'll work as a wired controller with the charge kit.

I have to agree with this. I think that the 360 controller is overall the best console controller period, but the D-pad sucks sometimes.

I use ps3 controllers and they work amazing on retropi. The only console I find I dont like to play with the ps3 controller is N64. To solve this I went on amazon and picked up two USB knock off N64 controllers for $14. They are amazing and work way better than I imagined they would. Between those, the ps3 controllers and a USB fight stick I find I have everything I need on my retropi

Not unique looking, but DS4's are better than PS3's. They are easier to get working on a PC. But you have to use DS4Windows for some emulators. It's easy to plug and play, or if you have blutooth it syncs without much trouble. In DS4Windows you can turn off the light but it's still bad on batteries.

I would recommend a PS3 pad for stuff that requires the d-pad, sure it's not perfect but it's miles better than that abomination of a d-pad on the 360 controller

Not sure how it could be easier than the ps3 lol. I literally just plug them in and they work. Emulation station automatically recognized them and all I had to do was set the button mapping. Took all of about 1 minute and thats being generous with the time lol. Im sure the ds4 is easy as well but I like the ps3 controller. They are also much cheaper.

I never tried it with emulation station, but in windows it dont work unless you use a program. I hear there's ways to do it without the program tho but I've never done that. The program requires a online connection and plays ads too. So I prefer DS4. I use the blutooth. I don't plan to ever get a PC without blutooth again.

I find that retropie has worked with any and all controllers I've tried on it. If there's any you want me to try that you don't have, let me know and I'll test it if I have it.

Oh and no, the play and charge kit for 360 pads does not work as it doesn't have the data lines wired up.

I actually have this controller! I'll get it tested for you soon and let you know. One thing I will say about this controller thats handy is the fact that it has 3 modes you can switch between, which means you can use it for mouse based games, like DOS games. I hope this controller works. It'd be awesome, especially on a Pi 3 with bluetooth.. fingers crossed it works!

360 or Wii pro sounds good to me. Maybe get a saturn2USB adapter for games requiring a good dpad? Ps1/2/3 dpad is horrible for anything but changing guns in fpses.

There's a small program to use ps3 pads on Linux that's easy and works well, http://qtsixa.sourceforge.net.
