Seems correct. But why butcher a PAL one? Why not just get a cheap famicom and av mod it and use a converter? Or even RGB mod it. Then u would have the extra soundchannel and ability to connect a famicom disksystem to.

I don't really see it as butchering. I have a couple of PAL machines lying around, NTSC ones aren't that common around here. So it's cheaper to get the parts and just swap them around. The plan is to RGB mod the NES, but I don't want to do it on a (in my eyes) inferior PAL version. Thanks for your input though :)

EDIT: finding the right crystal with the correct frequency (21.477mhz) seems to be a challenge though.

Yes, you can change it to NTSC with just the PPU, CPU and crystal. I wouldn't be too bothered about the quality of the crystals, given how hard they are to find - I've done it to a couple of consoles and haven't had any issues with them.

If you want to RGB mod it, try and get hold of a French console - there's just something satisfying about using an official cable and not having to make holes in the back of the console.

Thanks for the confirmation, I also didn't know the French NES came with the multi AV out port, but no RGB despite what the writing above the port says, interesting. It would be a lot cleaner indeed, but I think they are as hard to come by as an NTSC one.

Its a shame it can't be done just by replacing the crystal alone. Needing the CPU and PPU from an NTSC machine kinda makes the whole thing pointless. You might as well just use the NTSC machine instead of going through the work of swapping the chips and crystal...

True, but the chips and crystal only cost me €14 and a NTSC NES would cost 3-4 times that, if not more. But oh well, that way I can test my desoldering iron as well which I will be buying next week :)

No, but you can use their replacement easily on Aliexpress, see TS :)

Oeh, nice! I haven't received my Ali Express orders yet, I ordered the CPU/PPU/crystal as above. My desoldering station is on it's way as well. If I encounter any problems with the crystal I ordered, can I get back to you? :)

Hopefully you'll receive NTSC and not PAL - UA6527 / UA6528 chips. I believe Jason from GameTech has had trouble getting those from AliExpress in the recent past (for HiDef NES, IIRC).

Clarification: Most of the images on AE have UA6527 P suffix, indicating PAL.

The picture and description mentioned the chips without the P suffix, let's hope I will get the correct ones. Thanks for the warning though, I'll pay extra attention to it :)

Are these brand new chips or pulled from old consoles?

Brandnew replacement ones, so the ones I will be getting are not the original chips. I'd prefer to have old chips pulled from a console, but I guess it would be crazy for somebody to pull these for me :)

Interested to see if this works. How much did you pay in total for the crystal and 2 chips?
