I recently bought three Famicoms in very bad outside shape for $0.01 each.

I'd probably swap an NTSC NES for a PAL NES just to have one. I'd have to dig around and find one, but I know I have some! Also, then I could play some of my PAL games on original hardware :D

If all works out I probably will, but they're already spoken for.

I did this myself. I have a PAL NES, with Famicom CPU, PPU and Crystal. I bought the Famicom for super cheap. I then Hi Def NES'd my newly converted PAL to NTSC NES. Works fine.

Ah, no I was sent twice the same chip instead of the UA6528 and UA6527. They are on their way to me now.

@AtomizerZero: nice, thanks for confirming. I am using replacement chips (not Nintendo), hopefully that works as well :)

Yeah I got the chips in. Bought myself a desoldering iron, butunfortunately I couldn't get the old chips out, there were a few chips that were stuck. I tried for a few days, but wasn't successful and eventually gave up :(

But seeing as @AtomizerZero has been successful, it is definitely doable.

Those pins are most likely the ground pins. They are shitty to get out. What desoldering iron did you get?

A few pins I meant.. yeah they were, got myself an Aouye 474+ if I recall correctly. Most of the pins I was able to remove in under a second, but some (like 5 in total) just didn't budge no matter what I did. Tried playing with the heat as well and then I damaged some pads so gave up and bought a ready NTSC NES instead. Was really fed up with myself at that time.. :(

I read it as pins anyway lol

So, something you should/could do is use some flux, flow new solder onto the pins, and the use your desoldering gun to get the solder flowing and then pump it out. What i do, is gently do a circling motion, moving the pin with the desoldering gun to get all the solder hot and ready to be pulled, then suck it up. It works reliably for me.

That's exactly what I did except for the flux part. Works very well for the most part indeed. Too late for me now, hope your tips can be of use to somebody else :)

pal isnt so inferior, we've got a higher vertical resolution than NTSC regions.

But almost no games ever used it so instead that only showed as black borders at the top and bottom of the screen.

Ristar on the Mega Drive is the only game that comes to mind that actually runs with 240 lines rather than 224 when played in 50Hz. But I would much rather have correct speed any day of the week :)
