    Hi

I have a PAL frontloader NES that has already been modded with the NESRGB mod. However I want to play my games full screen at 60Hz. So, I intend on picking up a US toploader NES and swapping the relevant internals. Just wanted to check in here to confirm that my thinking is right.

    1. Remove CPU,PPU and crystal from the US toploader
    2. Remove CPU,PPU and crystal from the PAL frontloader
    3. Solder the CPU,FPU and crystal from the US toploader into my PAL frontloader
    4. Change the PAL/NTSC jumper on the NESRGB board as essentially it is now an NTSC system
    5. Lift pin/leg 4 of the CIC lockout chip
    6. That's it?
I have an Everdrive so I will be able to play the US games as they were intended (full screen/60hz). How about my PAL NES cartridges, what effect will doing this mod have on them?

It would be easier to just import an US NES and swap your NESRGB...

I guess it would, but for me the front loader just looks so much better, plus it's the model I grew up with. I'm happy doing all the mods, just checking my workings really.

    That I did not know.

I think I am going to stick with my plan though, as I'm hoping to pick up a cheap toploader on Saturday at a local Retro fair. Also my current NES is in lovely condition, and already has the RGB port installed etc etc.

My NES is a mix between a French PAL and US frontloader , with a NESRGB board , i've kept the case and the AV/Power board with RGB plug from the French one and used the NTSC motherboard from the other one .
So , i only had to desolder ppu and av board , they work perfectly together.;)

Cool, sounds good. Don't think that would work in my case as I am planning on picking up the toploader US NES2 model, these go for low prices usually and definitely much lower than the US frontloader. Then removing the CPU/PPU/Crystal and putting them in my PAL frontloader. I'm pretty sure it'll work, and my soldering is much better than it used to be. I'm planning on fitting a socket for the CPU as well as the PPU that already has one.

I paid around 20 USD my US frontloader in loose on ebay , but yeah , swapping CPU/PPU/Crystal from a toploader should work also .
About the everdrive , you will have to choose ntsc games in priority , some PAL games will be too fast and/or glitchy.

Don't hold out on us, please! Where did you find consistent supply of toploaders for less than frontloaders?

That certainly isnt the case in the UK, I've yet to find a US Frontloader for less than £60.

They are just cheaper and more plentiful than the Frontloaders here in the UK, that's certainly been my impression from what I've seen at various retro game shows anyway.

I forgot toploaders are incompatible with your older TVs.

Good find, nothing remotely that cheap on eBay right now. Plus the UK pound is pretty awful at the moment.

The USA 's way should be the cheapest i think , oh and also maybe the Japanese auction , an old and dirty famicom in loose can do the job too.

what are the chances youd want to part with the sacrificed top loader after surgery?

Outgoing US rates border on criminal these days. Try out a postage calculator.

I wouldn't need it anymore so it would be up for grabs.
