there's probably a better project to save that for. essentially the same chips are in a famicom, and I'd imagine over 10 million more of them exist than nes top loaders.

This exactly, I hadn't actually realised how expensive the toploader would be at around £80-90, which is a lot to pay for a donor console. Instead I got a Famicom for about £12; on its way from Japan right now, which will give me the CPU/PPU/Crystal that I need for my project.

I was wondering if someone managed to create an nes with an ntsc and pal cpu/ppu combo.
    Is that possible?

anything is possible, but lets look at what youd have to do, first off, youd have to hope there is a chip enable or some other single wire way to turn chips off and on for both the ppu and cpu, if there is, youre looking at 3 connections, youd have to turn on the pal cpu/ppu/crystal when the ntsc one is off, and vice versa, depending on these chips abilities, and how easy you want the switching to be, this could easily end up costing more than just buying the appropriate console... someone who has a little more knowledge on the nintendo cpu/ppus should chime in and tell us if its even possible to piggyback them and choose which chip is on... if its not, you need to actually interupt every line to swap chips... not a cost effective thing to do...

There's a way to disable the cpu and PPU.i think I posted in a thread recently.

I think the ppu has a CE or OE pin and the cpu you hold the reset line I believe.

that coupled with a switch to select the crystal should do it then, 3p4t switch should be able to handle it...

Instead of paying for a whole new top loader, why not just make an over clocker mod?
    You could run at 60hz.
And from what I assume you live in Europe or Australia because you have a PAL NES. So don't think if you import the US top loader directly that it would play. You would probably need a step down transformer because of the difference in the power voltage. Good luck on fixing it though, I hope it goes well for you.

im pretty sure his goal is to run the appropriate region games, natively...

    Hm, I guess so.
But maybe there could be a region converter for playing NTSC games on PAL.

it is unnecessary to try to convert the regions, that is the easy part, the hard part is making them play correctly on the systems, which is what he is addressing.

Still waiting on my famicom to arrive, then I'll move the components over to my front loader. Remember, on the NES it's the CPU/PPU/Crystal that designates the region and speed. I simply want my pristine PAL NES front loader to run full screen, full speed NTSC. I have an Everdrive so that'll house all my NTSC games. I also have a bunch of PAL cartridges, which from what I've read, will work but with varying degrees of success.

FYI job done and it works perfectly. Also took the opportunity to enable the extra sound channel. Overall this mod wasn't too hard, just takes a bit of patience, and it really helps if you have a desoldering station.

It works really...Famicom is so cheap versus NTSC U. I am looking for a CPU/PPU NTSC for my Hi def NES.

One question what's the best revision about PPU CPU? from famicom AV, NES NTSC U, earlier or last (NES make until 2003).

I've used lots (probably close to 100) of the original and AV Famicom consoles and haven't noticed any marked difference between the palettes, although I'm honestly not the sort of person who looks for minute changes. I haven't tried any NTSC NES consoles.
