I bought God of War back in the day. Everyone said it was awesome, so I figured I'd give it a try.

I Played for a lot for a few days in a row and had a blast.
Then I got really really tired of it.
Which is cool, but then I had to continue to hear about how awesome the game is by everyone.
Then the sequel comes out. I try it out at a friend's house, and am just as bored as I previously was.

Now, they re-release the two on PS3. It gets reviewed by magazines... again? "It's still awesome!" Hey, congratulations.

Can someone explain it to me? Am I oblivious to some finer mechanics or something that make it a truely amazing game? It just seems like there's no point after a while. I could barely see a reason for a sequel, other than story, and now there's a third one (there was one on PSP, too, right?).
How much crap can Kratos get into? Why do I feel I should save my thumbs?

This is the first and only time in my life that I've ever been angry about a video game's existence.
Well, except for Rock Band. And a lot of Wii titles.

Why do we need to convince you? you like it or you don't.
You can't deny it's a quality game, allthough I had a repetetive feeling with the hack and slashing of goons.. but the epic battles with monsters are breath taking.
I understand you point though, I usually don't like hyped up games/movies/music as well as I get sick of everybody talking about it until I play/see/hear it myself which off course doesn't meet the expectations after all the bullshit hype up.
So I basically ignore everybody's ranting and just try stuff myself, usually at the point nobody is talking about it anymore and decide then if it's good or not.

Its really not that great of a game, unless you somehow missed every other hack and slash over the previous decade + previous to the games release, like most of the gamers Ive met that seem to proclaim the game as the best thing ever.

Dont get me wrong, it has good production values, and an actual story, but its neither the first hack and slash to do it, nor does the gameplay back up those production values.

I love this forum for this reason. This is the only game forum I've found where people don't clamor to reviews 90% of the time.

God of War is garbage gameplay wrapped up in a nicely produced box.

I think it's a great game, but like port187 said, it's a matter of you like it or not.

Bayonetta's demo was more fun than God of War II for me.

With that in mind, I m not a big fan of hack and slash games, they bore me after a while due to their inherit repetition.

The first level of God of War is my favorite part. After that it's repetitive. I just had my room mate at the time play through most of the levels. It was more fun to watch then press the same buttons over and over.

I can't even believe EA is making Dante's Inferno... It's exactly like God of War. But that's not really saying anything because God of War is just like everything else in it's genre...

I recently got a copy of bayoneta, and agree with barc0de, i enjoyed it a lot more than any of the god of war games.

My wife loves the 2 games, but that's mostly because they are easy enough for her to beat. She has a strange way of liking bad games, though. I remember that her favourite game for years was Congo for the Saturn. What the hell?

You're right, it's not bad. Not great either, though. I agree with the OP, it gets boring fast.

I forgot about the tits. Nevermind, I love the game.

    Naw, not enough.
Anyways. I totally understand that my opinion is only good for myself, but there's plenty of other games that I find to be of similar gameplay (not to beat a dead horse) which seemed just as fun (ballpark), if not occasionally more interesting.

It is very refined. No problems there.

Does the setting appeal immensely to people?

It's odd, I have loved beating some games that were simply and obviously crappy. I loved HAZE. That game is a piece of shit. Annoying characters, the plot tries to be cool but just gets cheezy and obvious, the graphics look about, like, 6 3/4th-gen instead of 7th...
and yet it was very satisfying. Then again, about 33% of that satisfaction was me laughing-my-ass-off at it.

My point: Metacritic (take it or leave it) lists the top rated PSP game as God of War: Chains of Olympus. No way! Unless, maybe the PSP's library is really crappier than I thought...

    Makes sense. Really does.

Personally, what can kill almost any game for me is QTE. I can only stand a few games that do it (Shenmue).

God of War didn't click with me at first, mostly because I didn't get that the whole first level is a giant boss battle stretched out over a giant geographic space. The second game starts off the same way, with that huge struggle to disable the parts of the Colossus before you take it on from the outside.

I'll also admit up front that the sex appeal is something that brought me into the game initially. But I stayed for some really well-developed platforming. Looking at the combat as the main attraction is a mistake, because it's really not the best part of the game. Having the camera fixed for certain segments is brilliant, as is the physicality of having to turn giant cranks or move wall-sized doors as you work out the solution. No, it's not really that different from other hack-and-slash platformers, but the presentation is top-notch.

One thing that really appealed to me personally was the way that the game was simultaneously respectful of, and brutal to, established Greek mythology. Taking well-known figures from history and literature and then running them over with a narrative steamroller has never been so well done. I won't spoil anything, but twisting characters we've come to know from countless movies and cartoons is incredibly satisfying in an adult way.

Anyway, I liked both of the PS2 games enough to look for other imitators. I really liked the next-gen Conan game on the 360, which added some neat weapon and graphical features without neglecting to steal any of the good God of War qualities. Conan is also a bit more accessible and less brutally in-your-face at the start.

sex?what sex? thats just low-poly tits, hardly convincing for a boner if you ask me.

games and sex is a joke, people should realise this. It's the idea of sex that sells games, not that it somehow enhances your ability to jack off.
