So I'm in work meaning I'm stuck using this crappy Sony Vaio laptop with a Celeron 2.50GHz CPU and 1GB of memory yet this thing can't play YouTube videos smoothly unless they are in 240p resolution and many times it won't display images correctly as shown below. Surely a laptop with a 2.50GHz CPU and 1 GB of memory can play YouTube videos and display images right. I'm pretty sure the graphic drivers are up to date as well.
I've tried both of the above ideas but nothing changed I'm afraid. I also wonder why it won't load images sometimes.
1st thing i'd do would be check the display drivers and software, try updating / downdating browers and drivers. 2nd thing is use c cleaner and scan for crap and registry fixes 3rdly boot up a linux live cd to see if the problem is still there, if not, format and reinstall windows 4th all else fails, accidentally spill some liquid in it, then while attempting to save it, accidentally push it off the desk and stand on it a few times(vigoursly if required) or drop down some stairs. being a sony viao it should react as desired to step 4 on a serious note, the gfx memory may be going funky on it, but its probably some combination of software stuff ups if you save the images and then open them in MS Paint, do they load correctly?
check the ram with memtest (a lot of linux livecd's come with it), it may be a ram failure or (as someone said before) a gpu error. Boot a linux livecd and see if everything works fine there.
I'm sure they are awesome but I can't see them apart from the top quarter of each image. Yep. I use Fire Fox but I've also tried IE and Chrome./ Both give the same problems. I've done all the software updates and Reg clean up but nothing changed. I haven't tried the Linux livecd that you are Guaripolo mentined though so I'll give that a shot. Oh yes, I tried saving the images to my PC but when opened up in Photoshop or paint they look just the same as they do in the browser. It's not all iamges though. The image that I posted at the top of this thread works fine. Maybe this PC can't cope with certain jpeg compressions? If I can't fix this heap I'll have to buy another.
The images just look like they didnt download completely. When you only get part of an image it looks like just your picture - suggesting network/internet issue or maybe browser.
That's what I thought originally but the whole page loads as completed in all browsers. That also doesn't explain the very poor YouTube playback. Hmmmm, maybe this thing is on it's last legs.
Youtube is easily explained - video decoding is quite intensive and a celeron is shit. Pages loading in full - also doesnt mean anything, browsers downloading multiple things at once. So it will load the page (which is just text) then pull it all the images. Larger ones will take longer (therefore be last to download). Certainly sounds like a connectivity issue to me. (as well as being crap for video)
I'm on a 5mbps line so it's not a connection issue and my co-worker who has a nice i5 Toshiba doesn't have these issues. I think the computer is just shit to be honest. I have another laptop at home with an i3 in it. I'll probably bring that to work rather than use the crap I've been given.
Connectivity issues can be caused by problems on the machine. I didnt mean the actual connection necessarily
I'd have thought your only choice would be a lightweight OS (linux live) - I use MINT on my main computer & Ubuntu on my netbook. My netbook with Ubuntu will play youtube (choppy @ 480 but fine at 360p) and that has a 1.60Ghz Atom CPU with 1GB RAM. However Bad_Ad is right, Celerons are insanely crap especially on windows - I had the displeasure of using one on many occasions. I'd definitely try Ubuntu or another flavour of linux which has a better TCP/IP stack and different drivers for your video which should be supported right out of the box. If you do stick with linux you've always got the option to download a custom kernel optimised for Celeron which would squeeze more speed from it. Easier to install than it sounds, though I presume you're moving to a different laptop as soon as possible in which case this is a moot point but I thought I'd mention it. I've got a custom Atom kernel installed on Ubuntu and the difference is huge.
Using a form of linux would be a good idea but that would cause alsorts of headaches with compatability between co-workers files and stuff. It seems that this is a pretty awful computer so a move would probably be best. Thanks for the input though.
