I consider this big black hole scary as well... Sumatra is not on a borderline of a tectonic plate, so this could happen on almost any other place where earth quakes occur.
Well, it could happen anywhere there's already a hole. I'm pretty sure that was already there. Tokyo, one of the most earthquake prone cities in the world, has so much underground shit. No telling where you'd turn up.
Only two people died in that hole? That's quite a miracle in it's self !! Does anyone know how far down it goes? Yakumo
Seattle is much the same. Much of downtown is built upon "old" Seattle. There is an actual city below Seattle.
I'd love to see that. Are there any sites that show pictures of this city under the new one? It sort of reminds me of an episode from Ulysses 31. Yakumo
That's one big hole. And as for Seattle. I lived in that area for 25 + years and never took that tour.
Thanks for the pictures Atenhouse. Is there any reason why they built a new area above the old city instead of just knocking it down then building over it? Yakumo
Taken from Wikipedia. "On June 6, 1889, most of Seattle's central business district burned to the ground in the Great Seattle Fire. It was decided to rebuild the city one to two stories higher than the original street grade, as Pioneer Square had been built mostly on filled-in tidelands and often flooded. The new street level also assisted in ensuring that gravity-assisted flush toilets didn't back up during high tide in Elliott Bay."
