I don't see much problem with this. I mean, very few PS2 or XBOX games use a full DVD yet, heck, some PS2 games still come on CD. With games it really doesnt hurt to have to change discs once every 5 hours...

I expect there will be a HD-DVD "premium" version available bang on the PS3's launch, at either $50 or $100 less.

Any with a blue bottom are CD's. Some schmups, and things like old game compilations come on them. lots of early games in particular are on CD.

All XBOX games are on DVD

Here's the issue i see. I'm holding a retail unit in my hands right now, there is absolutely no way to remove the dvd drive without voiding the warranty and opening the console. So there can't be an upgrade path for the people who buy the first batch of systems. If microsoft makes a second version of the console with HD-DVD support, publishers will still have to print the disks on standard DVD's because of the first generation 360's. If that happens, publishers aren't going to make 2 different versions of the same game (one for DVD, the other for HD-DVD) it would double the production costs and confuse all the little old grannies who buy the games for their grandkids.

Microsoft is basicly telling the publishers that every game needs high resolution textures, graphics, polygons, etc... but you only have 9 gig to work with. Unless you want to start having users switch disks in the middle of the game. Although i should shutup before i get myself in trouble. (<-- i just like that smiley)

Well HD-DVD support is useful for watching movies on your 360 as well as games. So they can go and release a second HD-DVD version without upsetting anyone.

given the vaguelly rushed nature of the 360 this is just kind of expected, still no great loss as far as I'm concerned. "Data always expands to fill the space its got" talk - isn't really true, except in the cases of RPGs and the like. Raiden 3 comes on a CD and runs great with hardly any load time at all. Even the arcade game pauses like the ps2 version. Still I wonder how the old blu-ray drive for ps3 is going to work. Doesn't blu ray need cases for the discs to go into the drive with, like old Cd-r. Or have they got beyond that yet?

I'm pretty sure they decided to drop that a while back, but the first gen recorders in japan definately had cases, I remember seeing pictures of them

gta3 is 600mb but they use garbage to bump up the size, probably to make loading times faster by moving important data to the end of the disc?

Just an FYI, there is one xbox disk that is a CD. The Xbox Live Arcade demo came on a CD. Up until that point, it was sort of a secret as to if the xbox even had a security hash for a stamped cd game. (I think the game came with the pre-order copy of Forza, and had the Mrs. Pacman on it, but i'm not sure).

Not to throw this thread completely off topic, but there is a security hash that lets retail Xboxes play burned disks. Chances of that code being leaked anytime in the next 20 years? 0.0000000000000000000000000001%

...and who told you of this security hash? :icon_bigg

There must also be a security hash for the original Playstation that lets it play burned games without a modchip then!

though some games...gta san andreas comes to mind, uses a dual layer dvd, though how much of it i dunno, i dont think that this will hamper the 360 much, i doubt very highly that blu-ray will ever come close enough in manuafacuting and retail costs to be worth it....expect the majority of games to ship on standard dvd's and gta6 on blu-ray, 2 360 discs, 12 revo discs, and 1,00000,0000,0000 floppy discs for the pc version..hehe

I thought I read somewhere that Microsoft was against Blu-Ray and prefered HD-DVDs as the new standard?

odd, i had san andreas and the data was only enough for a regular dvd, aka 4.5 gb, though those that have dumped have tooken out garbage to make it 2.6 gb i think. Realistily i hear dumpers claim that the reason for the grabage files is to make it seem bigger and hamper on dumping in such. Though if i remember, don't you need a certain size to be able to burn to a dvd? Im mostly basining this on burning programs ive used, as movies it can vary with teh clip.

san andreas isn't dual layered....it's only 4.19 GB's...or so said HD Loader.

anyways, a majority of ps2 games were actually on a single layered dvd..thus they could be put on a HDD if one desired. While that is a valid point, it doesn't look good when a company like nintendo underestimated the demand for capacity. Having 3 or 4 disk games is annoying.
