been wanting to do this for a while-compare DaiMakaiMura~Ghouls'N Ghosts on two different platforms that both use Hudson's graphic chips: the NEC SuperGrafx (aka "PC-Engine 2") and Sharp X68000

SuperGrafx rendition was 8 megabit - X68000 rendition was about ~16 megabit

X68000 output is rgb or vga.

You should also label what pics are fromwhat, I had to go to the url and pic info to figure it out.

There's a similar page over here

I think the Sharp version is pretty much arcade perfect. Not surprising considering the hardware is very close to Capcom's original CPS board. The Genesis/Megadrive version has the best music though, definitely better than the arcade.

I loved the Genesis renditons music. by far the best. next would be the arcade and X68000 music, which are the same. then the Saturn and PS1 which are the same themselves but slightly different than the arcade and X68000 music. last would be the SuperGrafx music (not counting weaker console or computer versions) because the SG had the same lame sound chip as the PC-Engine.

I spent many hours playing the Genesis version and I finally bought a SGX console plus G&G about a year ago. I can't really explain why, but it's one of my favourite games of all time.

I've never played Maximo (or whatever the PS2 tribute is called) is it good?

  6. X68000 seems a little better than the SuperGrafx, but the SGX one is still very pretty - don't suppose you'd want to sell one, would you? :smt083

I've got the arcade version emulated on my Xbox, but I still never get round to listing the SGX on Ebay - I just can't part with it. Sorry!

I've been meaning to pick up the Genesis one...one of those games I should have...but never got around to it. I'd finally have something worth playing on Genesis.

the X68000 rendition is ALOT better than the SuperGrafx rendition. X68000 is, for all intents & purposes, the arcade game. the SuperGrafx renditon is half the meg count, and seems like a souped up PC Engine game with 8-bit sound and good to so-so graphics.

The last two images are from my site, and the page mr-monday linked to is mine. Now given that I've already done all this work I have to wonder why gigadrive didn't just link to those pages instead of linking a collection of images on this post?

And while we're bashing gigadrive, "a lot" is two words. ;)

And while I'm asking questions, why didn't you make your own images? It takes about forty seconds to fire up the emu and maybe sixty more to grab some select shots. It must have taken longer to scour google for images.

  11. I THOUGHT they had looked familiar and I had seen this sort of comparison somewhere before... :smt043

X68K was a great machine, it seems.

I got to play that PSX Castlevania port (chronicles, is it?) and it's really impressive for the time of that machine.

What would I need in the hypothetical case of wanting one?
It doesn't work on regular TVs, does it?

What software is good for it?

It outputs 15.75KHz RGB for old monitors and I believe some games support 33Khz VGA? Basically all you need a lot of cash for shipping. A nice X68K + shipping to North America would probably cost $400, more if you get the original monitor. If you want to get a fancy "modern" X68K with upgrade boards and stuff, you're looking at $1000+ :\

    wow... expensive.

I'll only buy one when and if I move to Japan, then.

Too bad, because it really looks like a cool machine.

Out of curiousity were there only like 6 or 7 games that came out for the Super Grafx? If you're not a collector, it just doesn't seem worth the investment for such few games.

I don't mind at all that you linked my images (thought I think it's good form to credit the source). I asked why you did your own comparison instead of linking to the two pages where it's already been done. You didn't even include links to the pages where a reader might find more images. If you're not adding to the discussion, why are you posting? Inquiring minds want to know!*

*and by that, obv, I mean me.

  18. Basically, it is THE ultimate PC Engine machine - being that it can play PC Engine games, if you own a SuperGrafx you are able to play the entire PC Engine Library. While it is true that there were only about 7 games released for it, the majority of them are quality - Daimakaimura, 1941, the enhanced version of Darius. Plus it just looks like a badass console. I don't regret purchasing mine. :-D Then again, Yakumo got me a stellar deal on it too.
