Firefox is way better than IE, not in safety though. We have extensions, themes, Search Engine Plug-ins, RSS Feed, Tabbed Browsing, ad blocking, a great download manager, more standardised HTML reading... Frankly, if you think IE is better then it is you that's the fan boy. omg its better then IE you have to use it.
Yes because im trying to push you into using it.... i use it because i like it simple... i havent got a single problem with it.
Yeah, neither is as safe as they could be. Thing is, Firefox keeps ads out of my way, and doesn't crash my machine like IE used to (WinME trauma again! yay!). And Tabbed Browsing is THE bomb. Though I was really disappointed the first time I got a pop-up some weeks ago. That's fixed, though, with a Plugin. It's also how you browse. Don't click on any of those drive-by install, keep your security settings as high as you can browse with, and clean your system regularly with Spybot and AAW.
I dont even do that and im ok. I guess its mainly down to the user but yeah IE isnt going to cause you major harm unless your really stupid about how you browse. I use Firefox sometimes but even then i dont use the tab feature dunno never got used to it.
I cleared my cookies and cache, and everything else, and im Still getting no pictures showing up. WTF, Im just going to use my brand new computer from now on, once I get it set up.
Gotta love it when the Firefox fanboys come out to play... mention IE and they'll be all over you like flies on shit about how you're a fanboy, your browser preferences are stupid, you're naieve for not switching, and blah blah blah blah blah ad nauseam. The simple truth is that while stock IE is more susceptable to security risks (and need I remind everyone that these are POTENTIAL SECURITY RISKS, not "OMG H4XORZ R OUT THERE RIGHT NOW WAITING FOR U 2 LET UR GUARD DOWN!!111") - and as many have stated, this is only because it is currently the dominant browser - IE in the hands of an experienced user who is diligent about security updates, maintaining a good firewall, and having a popup blocker can be as secure as anything else out there. It's all about preferences, and just because you have 'seen the light' with Firefox doesn't mean you need to CONSTANTLY be jumping on the IE users. Most of us have our reasons for sticking with the browser, and while I can't speak for everyone else, my setup is secure enough that I have no reason to switch to Firefox, and I'm sure many others feel the same way. It's not being a fanboy to not change your browser because someone says you should, nor is it being a fanboy to stick with what works for you instead of fighting to learn to use something else.
Meh, I don't really like Firefox either - but only because Opera's better in (nearly) every way! :smt023 Tabbed browsing since about 2002, integrated RSS, e-mail and newsgroups, mouse gestures (The Best Thing In The World Ever), and it has the best comformity to W3C standards out of any browser - if a website doesn't work in Opera, it's the website's fault! I hated Firefox's extensions you had to download, mainly because I was too used to Opera having all this shit (and more) already built-in. The only bad thing are the Google ads, but to be honest I've used Opera for about 4 years now (and back then it had big-ass ads!) and they've never annoyed me. If I had the money I would actually pay the €34 for the non-ad version - I think it's worth it. One more thing - it's the only modern Windows browser that runs competently on the crappiest of PCs. I have a Pentium 90 with 64MB RAM, and use Opera 8 all the time in Windows NT 4 and 95. IE 6 doesn't even install in Win95 (you need 98SE or higher), Firefox doesn't work in either (can't remember if it's lack of MMX or it needs 98 or higher), and Mozilla runs like a chronic disease. Even in college I use Opera. Our user profiles are limited to 2.5MB, so I just installed it onto a Zip disk! ^_^
Zilog Jones, would Opera run under 32MB of RAM? I've got a little Pentium 166 laptop running Windows 98SE JP, and I'm looking for a browser that supports tabs and mouse gestures, both of which are handled by AvantBrowser on my desktop. However, that thing is far too bulky to try and shoehorn into 32MB of RAM, and I took a look at Opera's website, but they're too busy tooting their own horn about how awesome their browser is that they forgot to put system requirements anywhere.
For people who don't like firefox or IE and use windows... there is another solution. Try Kmeleon. Not quite as popular as firefox or opera but a nice change none the less. Grab it here: http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/
32MB's probably pushing it. It nearly devours all the 64MB on my P90, and ends up doing a lot of the page filin'. You can probably get another 32 megs pretty cheap if you looked around - I don't know much about laptop RAM of that era, but it's probably some sort of EDO RAM. If there's like two 16MBs in there things will be a bit more annoying. I found it a bit annoying that they don't have system requirements on their site either. Maybe they're just assuming no one's using PCs older than 9-10 years old any more?
Thing is, I think the laptop only supports a total 48MB. Anyways, I downloaded Opera and gave it a shot, and it actually performed rather well - only about 2 seconds slower than the default Win98SE IE5. However, the overabundance of toolbars, shortcuts, and bells & whistles, not to mention an absolutely mongoloid handling of cookies meant that I sent it the way of the dodo pretty quick... I wouldn't mind having the default IE5 on the system (tried upgrading to IE6 and Windows essentially swallowed it's own head, requiring a full reinstall) but I'm so used to tabbed browsing and popup blocking. I'm not too worried about security - most of the stuff going around right now targets the NT-based systems anyways, and I'll only be using it at home or on campus, both of which are behind decent hardware firewalls. I might give that K-Meleon Purge suggested a try though...
Which Opera were you using? 8 has a barely existant toolbar (and fully customisable) - just leave the page bar and the address bar on - everything else is ass. And what's wrong with handling of cookies? i just leave it on the defaults and it works fine. Or are you talking about Wand? Well it's easy to get used to, and handy if you need several logins or don't always want to log into a certain page.
I don't know, but something in this conversation brought some unresolved IE Karma against my computer. Last afternoon, something, somewhere (I'm blaming Torrentspy.com, since it's the only "questionable" site I visited, but I really don't know what happened) attempted to hijack my Firefox, fucked all my bookmarks and added a process to WinXP which disables the TaskManager and is VERY annoying - because as soon as it disables it, all processes begin to stop responding and you can't do anything about it. So you HAVE to restart. It's like part of the malware got installed but the other half wasn't - since it's not detected by Spybot or AAW. Not a Virus, either. I located the guilty process - by opening the Taskmanager as soon as the machine starts. Something named MSNA32.EXE, which also "reinstalled" a Windows Messenger process on my machine (msnmsgr.exe). I've tried editing the startup registry on Spybot SD, checking the processes on HijackThis, and doing everything on safe mode. It keeps coming back. I even went to RegEdit and deleted ANYTHING that had anything to do with this process. Nothing. It's like some fucking ninja malware process. Can anyone help with this? It'd be very much appreciated...
I've seen something like that on one the PCs in one of my computer labs in college. Does it put some dodgy-looking search bar in IE (and even just normal Explorer), and keep putting links on the desktop and crap? I had no luck using Ad-aware or Spybot, and I try ending suspicious looking prcesses and it just locks up explorer...
Firefox users.... its started.... As for Xerdo try one of those sites that helps people out... like erm http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/ They are the only ones who had that process mentioned in thier site. Also try the firefox forums if they exist...
