yea but isn't that still monopolizing? when another company clearly has a better product and you "crush" it, wouldn't that still give datel a good case?
Monopoly rules don't apply unless you actually hold a monopoly in the field. This is why Apple can get away with things with its computers and OS X that Microsoft could not with Windows. When it comes to video games, Microsoft clearly does *NOT* have a monopoly position. -hl718
That's a possibility but DMCA case law is still a bit shaky. From Microsoft's POV it could safely block the method used by Datel and the problem was solved. If Datel sued (which it did), Microsoft has a good chance of winning and collecting attorney's fees. If Microsoft sued Datel, the outcome is a lot greyer. Besides why waste $$$ on a lawsuit when you can just update the security and block the offending product? Lawsuits take time and money. A security update solves the issue as far as Microsoft is concerned. Remember these aren't knock-off hard drives from China that look like the real thing. These are obvious Datel products that can't be confused for Microsoft products. When people call support the easy answer is "We don't support third party products, please call the manufacturer (Datel) for support on your purchase." -hl718
