There is this video on spiked humor that takes a look how telecommunications companies like verizon & AT&T are wasting millions trying to make the internet a privately owned network. So for example if that law does pass in congress, depending on your provider you will only see the sites that pay "taxes" to the provider!!! The prvider can completely block or purposely slow down sites that dont pay the provider. I think this is the stupidest shit and it will ruin the internet. Net Neutrality is what we have right now and I want to keep it that way. By the way now the bill for this law called the Communications Opportunity, Promotion and Enhancement Act making its way through the House that could be voted on as early as next Wednesday. See the video here http://www.spikedhumor.com/articles/28228/Death_Of_The_Internet.html Sign the petition http://www.savetheinternet.com/
I'm sure it's horseshit. "Paying for Internet" has been an urban legend since... well... the start of the internet.
That's why we, the consumers, pay connection costs, and google et al, the providers, pay for the servers. This is nothing more than AT&T and co being greedy as fuck. The idea that they aren't getting enough from their customers already is an insult.
It's not horseshitl, it's something that they've been trying to get passed for a few years now. The says that they can give prefrerential treatment to sites to which they have contracts with, so say you have Verizon and they have a contract with Gamespy, then you would always get a good connection with gamespy. But that also means if you want to go to say 1Up.com Verizon is under no obligation to provide you with a decent connection (don't think it means they can block competitior's sites altogether, but I wouldn't be suprised if that happens.) Which is all total bullshit. I pay good money for broadband, I expect to get the same speed at every site I choose to go to. This is like saying you have a Zenith TV, so you can only watch television channels that Zenith has a contract with. Fuck that.
I signed. This is total bullshit. I would go as far as moving north (i live in ohio) to canada to have the right kind of internet. And to the person above who said he cant vote becasue he dosent live in american, be happy lol. It dosent affect you, although forign support might be a good thing. Hopefully this dosent pass, and if it does we the people must make a HUGH public outcry.
I didn't see the petition, I just signed it. If this passes I'm going to start leeching off other people's networks. Yeah it's wrong, but the fucking companies brought this on themselves.
But do you pay enough? If they are offering the service to you at a loss to keep market share then ultimately they'll look for other ways to make money back. People who always go to the cheapest provider will destroy the industry & they won't care either. smf
Paying for bandwidth is ridiculous now as it is. What are you really paying for? Possibly electricity and hardware, that's it. There is no reason to charge per KB/MB/GB/TB/PB etc., except that the backbone and upstream providers can make more money.
So what if they're offering the service at a loss. Who's problem is that? Not mine. If they're loosing money then maybe they need to streamline the process a bit, trim a little fat. I pay my $49.95 for broadband (when I could probably get it cheaper,) I expect it to work no matter which site I go to. If my provider has a problem with that then I'll get another provider. Thing is most ISPs do a lot more than provide internet services (Verizon, Adelphia, SCB Yahoo, etc.) They're making money, don't beleive them. But if they start restricting my choices then I'll be forced to find another company who won't. Becasue fuck that.
That's for access to it... of course it costs money. Google around. The "internet tax" SPAM mail is only outdated by the 1-legged cancer girl and Bill Gates givign out thousands to test Microsoft's new email tracking software.
Sorry for the bump, but there's been some developments in the meantime. Looks like net neutrality in the States is in trouble.
Fellas, the way the law is set to be right now, providers can not block any traffic, they can only give 'certain' traffic (IE people that pay premiums) higher priority.. nothing it being blocked.
Give them and inch and they'll take a mile. The law also says they can purposely block sites that have content they don't agree with. So Verizon gets to block all of the "Verizon Sucks!" websites and so on. Then if you want total unrestricted surfing they make you pay more for it. This is the logical extension of these events.
That just isn't true. Besides, even if it was, all of the providers would still be free to throttle non-paying traffic to give paying traffic more bandwidth. Hope you like surfing obscure sites like this at 56k or less.
As long as they can hold off any laws until Bush is out of the whitehouse, we're probably good. No democrat would want to piss off his liberal voting fans, and we all know there's no fucking way a republican is getting in the whitehouse next term.
What the hell does bush have to do with anything? This is michael powell from the FCCs deal if anything. Who has been very much on the side of the consumer up until this. Is this even a republican/democrate isssue anyway? I dont think so. What party is in the whitehouse in 08 makes NO difference. Rebublican in 08? heh, 50/50 shot just like the last 2 races......
