Probably everyone here has heard about Hurricane Katrina and how badly it devestated New Orleans, LA; Biloxi, MS and smaller towns around those areas.

Here's just a screenshot of how bad it ended up for New Orleans.

New Orleans, for those who don't know, is a city that is below sea level. The city is protected by levys, which broke and they are flooding the city, trapping the disabled and elderly from getting medical attention as well as food and water. It's making the city inaccessible. People are camping out on the freeway in Downtown New Orleans where there really is no place to go.

Looting has begun in the city and the Mayor said it is ok to take stuff you need such as food and water, but anyone caught with brand name clothes, electronics, etc. will be arrested.

The reason help hasn't come as fast compared to how quickly Florida got help last year is because major highways and bridges have either been destroyed completly or heavily damaged. What's kinda sad too is that the same states that have been devestated helped Florida get back on its feet by sending theirpower plant employees to help restore power to our state, their state's national guard, as well as volunteer groups in those states.

Search and Rescue teams are uncovering dead bodies hour by hour and the list of family members missing is getting longer and longer.

Of course, those who were not affected by the hurricane and want to help those that are less unfortunate can by simply going to redcross.org and make a donation if you can.

I live in Dequeen, AR, which is the most southern part of Arkansas. Its so dry here its not even funny. We were planning to fish in the gulf of Mexico this September, but we might as well forget it, now. Sadly enough, I think New Orleans is going to go the way of Atlantis and become a lake eventually. I think this place is going to be a wasteland after this. There was a fishing wharf where the boats were docked, but that place was made out of wood for the most part, and is now gone. Along with the town next to it. I have a feeling that there will be lots of people migrating from that place.

Yeh. One reporter even had the audacity to label them as refugees!! I don't know what's going to happen to the city. I'm sure they'll try to salvage the place rather than abandon it, the city, as well as the region has been struck hard before and they did rebuild, its not like a nuke went off in the place.

One of these days (Maybe the next few!), New Orleans will be completely submerged.

They shouldn't be living there without letting the river naturally level the land.
I hope they don't rebuild, it will just flood again. Once the ice caps melt, new orleans and NYC are doomed anyway.

This could have been a lot worse if the hurricane didn't weaken before it hit and take a turn for the east just slightly. I know I went to sleep that night with the category 5 wall projected to hit New Orleans pretty much dead on. I know mississippi got it bad, but new orleans would have been the real atlantis if they got hit.

this is also spreading to other areas via gas prices. Two of the pipelines that supply the southern US are shut down and many stations where I live are out of gas.

Then, Kevin Costner and I shall roam the earth in search of dry land.

Humans fight nature until the very end. One of the biggest questions running in my mind is when the earth will hit its carrying capacity for humans. It happens to all other species yet we keep on putting it off...Maybe a nice plague will come along and thin out our ranks.

That will only happen when we get rid of all the animal habitats. Until then we can steal land from the animals until they evolve enough to use firearms on us. :no

Back to topic, i have a really good friend living there and finally i heard news from him and his family. They live in Baton Rouge. He sad there wasn't as bad as New Orleans, but the whole state suffered a lot.

80% of New Orleans is under water! Hope the Bush Administration use as much money they use to bomb other places, to help all those people and the city.

Man, I hope everyone is okay....

Anyone in the forum from the area (in case there's someone), please post so we can know your status.

I'll be sure to help if any of my local organisations starts something.
    This is horrible...

Wow, couldn't help slipping that little gem in, now could we?

On topic now, the devastation is massive, and they're projecting that New Orleans will be shut down for two months.

Devastation doesn’t even begin to describe New Orleans right now. The levies have busted and so far can't be fixed. The pumps have failed. Rescue workers are overwhelmed trying to find survivors. Bodies are floating in the streets with thousands more believed to be dead after being trapped in attics. The police are on the defensive and the mob rules. One reporter likened the chaos to something out Dawn of the Dead.

Sad thing is that most of this could have been avoided if they spent a couple of billion to wall off the city. Always too expensive and time consuming though till something like this happens. Maybe now they will.

I saw the City of New Orleans on TV yesterday. It looks as if a war had broken out there. I really feel sorry for the population of New Orleans. Looting stuff ain't doing them much in the "Good people of America" department here in Japan or the UK though. I was with a few friends (Japanese) when we saw it and each one of them couldn't understand why people are looting since here that sort of stuff just doesn't happen or in the Uk come to mention it. well, apart from the chavs.

Sad to say, but I thought you said in the topic "Dev station in new orleans"

As to the looting, they are all dirt poor , uneducated people who weren't smart enough to leave before a giant storm.

" I ran out of gas"

It took a fucking week for it to arrive, how much time do you need to leave??

My favorite line was "I only have three pills left for my kidneys"

YOU HAD A FUCKING WEEK TO GET PILLS

New orleans is a seriously poor and dirty place, notorious for gang murders and drugs.
I feel bad for those who could not leave, but filling your soon to be demolished and abandoned house with ipods will do you fuckall when you have nothing to drink or eat.

I'm not trying to start a flame war or talk about politics. I just want to see if he'll help his own country.

Post deleted for the sake of keeping things happy, but every experience I've had in the south has been fucking awful, and I'll leave it at that.

While I tend to agree, I think the money earmarked for Africa should go to them instead. Aids is there to stay, we need the money here right now.

It's not a south thing for looting either, just look at the Rodney King riots. Those a-holes did it in Seattle, KC and other non-southern areas.

I feel really bad for the people who lost everything but mostly the people who lost loved ones. Stuff can be replaced, but people... nope. If people are going to donate, please give to the Red Cross or Salvation Army, not the fly by night scammers out there.

Looting isn't just a Southern practice. I take no offense from the comment, but I just thought I'd let you know. And yes, I can guarantee you that there are plenty of assholes that live down here, as with everywhere else in the world.

I want to know what logic is in stealing from these places. What good does a TV do you in a city that has been flooded? I can understand food and such, but I keep hearing about electronic equipment being taken. Can someone explain this to me, or are these people just stupid?

Right. I'm sure the president will say f them, I want to see part of our country rot and and suffer. We are already broke, what's another billion or so. It's just going to take time to get what's needed there, just like in Florida a few years ago. I'll tell you one good thing about this country. The good people shine in a situation like this and the turds come to the surface quick. It will be handled once the water goes down enough to restore some power and the scum are controlled. It will take months and months for this to even seem like something has been done.
