The damn officials should have planned for poor people who couldn't leave. Period.

Now the city is on fire, and people are being raped and killed, and surely new orleans will be no more.

the problem now is what do you do with 250,000 undereducated , unskilled, homeless, peniless people?

Who will take them? How can you avoid them destroying local economies?
All the illegal immigrants hold all the jobs that could have been filled by them?

    So now you are talking:

    1) 2-4 years of massive homeless government camps.

    a. Massive camps full of crime and/or disease drugs and violence.

    b. Smaller camps , but higher possibility of the people falling through the cracks. We can't even take care of the poor we have in the south when they have houses, let alone walking homeless.

2.) Relocation across america of POOR welfare dependant peoples.
    a. Who would want them after the initial push to help?
    b. no southern poor states can accept the load.
    c. Send them to far away states?

3.) Rebuilding. They HAVE TO, all the oil and goods flow through the city. Terms of insurance most times obligate landlords to rebuild. They cannot take the money and leave.

a.) 50 billion - 100 billion to rebuild new orleans to dutch standards. Category 5 prepared. Construction of all major highways as reinforced elevated structures with shade. Construction of a new , elevated stadium with generators.
b.) Half assed political wrangling and ineffective repairs (most likely)

Yeh. Lets just hope a nuke doesn't go off anytime soon...

The city and all the towns will be rebuilt because I seriously doubt the government, both national and state, will come up with a plan to relocate all of those who lived in new orleans.

I also want to say that Bush, is not only at fault. Yeh you see the senators of the states of MS, and LA as well as the mayor's of the cities devestated complaining on national news but its also their fault for not pushing bills that would have strengthened the levies or increase emergency work force base for such a catastrophe. Everyone, IMO is to blame.

Reminds me of a city in the middle ages...
    a city(core) surrounded by walls!

The best solution would be to BAN all housing space from the center of the city and relocate it to higher leveled suburbs etc. around!
(compared to most big EU-cities you have distinct housing-rings/areas around a CBD-only center - making it a lil easier)
    - relocating housing-space is much more cheaper then relocating/rebuilding companies and skysrapers.
    - you could more easily evacuate that spot! - just forbid to stay in that zone in case of preparation for emergency.
    - You would need a MASSIVE concrete wall all around the center. Dikes may be cheaper to build but need more space, can soak/erode/wash out and break more easily. Since this is the chance to build something big (you cant count on enhancements in the future -as you have seen- to adapt to situations caused by climatic changes etc.
    - Maybe even pneumatic erectable walls?! *seen something smaller&similar on German TV 2weeks ago when we had some flooding in the pre-alps* They are testing studies in pilot-projects with 90° turnable sidewalks :)

Massive public transport with high-speed mainroutes between the center and the living areas + highways

Not deporting everyone at once which is pretty much impossible Id say, the relocation + building projects will take 3years for first results and a 15-20years to reach that goal (with constant, solid investitions)

The place better be rebuilt. Where else would we have a Mardi-Gras, Girls Gone Wild Mardi Gras edition, and COPS Mardi Gras special?

Yeah, Social is right on the money there. You know something though, the real story here is getting out despite all the infotainment of the mainstream media. Any of you guys herd that interview of the Mayor of Now Orleans Ray Nagin yet? Not the ten second soundbite version, but the whole interview? He speaks like someone who doesn't give a fuck what the establishment thinks anymore, i.e. a real person. The guy goes off for like 15 minutes blasting everyone who screwed up (including himself) and describes people in thier attics in water up to their necks. We're not seeing this stuff on CNN but it's getting out anyway. We need more politicans like this guy.

Yeah, I saw him on the Japanese news ! They bleeped out his bad language though since it was the English version I was watching. Still, that's what we need in a politician, someone who speaks the truth. None of this Bush shite saying "I believe New Orleans was a great city and we'll make it a greater city". Typical shite that politicians like him always spout. They must all get it from a "guide to speaking shite" hand book made especially for politicians.

it's sad when people have to turn a simple fund raiser political. No matter how you feel about Bush, this isn't about him.

haha, I thought it was cool that he had the balls to say that. I found the clip pretty funny, Mike Myers and Chris Tucker's facial expressions were priceless.

I heard the Mayor too. It's pretty fucked up that it takes something like this to make a politician crack and actually speak the truth and mean what he says.

Chris Tuckers face was so funny. THere he was just leaning against the fridge when the camera panned stright to him.

"Comedian Mike Myers was paired with West for a 90-second segment that began with Myers speaking of Katrina's devastation. Then, to Myers' evident surprise, West began a rant by saying, "I hate the way they portray us in the media. If you see a black family, it says they're looting. See a white family, it says they're looking for food."

While allowing that "the Red Cross is doing everything they can," West — who delivered an emotional outburst at the American Music Awards after he was snubbed for an award — declared that government authorities are intentionally dragging their feet on aid to the Gulf Coast. Without getting specific, he added, "They've given them permission to go down and shoot us."

After he stated, "George Bush doesn't care about black people," the camera cut away to comedian Chris Tucker."

Brown pushed from last job: Horse group: FEMA chief had to be `asked to resign'
just read this .. and hurt my head - falling off my chair! :smt1069:smt1069:smt1069:smt1069

"The Oklahoman got the job through an old college friend who at the time was heading up FEMA."

"Before joining the Bush administration in 2001, Brown spent 11 years as the commissioner of judges and stewards for the International Arabian Horse Association, a breeders' and horse-show organization based in Colorado.
``We do disciplinary actions, certification of (show trial) judges. We hold classes to train people to become judges and stewards. And we keep records,'' explained a spokeswoman for the IAHA commissioner's office. ``This was his full-time job . . . for 11 years,'' she added.
Brown was forced out of the position after a spate of lawsuits over alleged supervision failures.
``He was asked to resign,'' Bill Pennington, president of the IAHA at the time, confirmed last night.
Soon after, Brown was invited to join the administration by his old Oklahoma college roommate Joseph Allbaugh, the previous head of FEMA until he quit in 2003 to work for the president's re-election campaign."

Well, I guess we don't have to worry about Fema being some kind of front for the New World Order and the eventual takeover of the country then, since they've shown how incompetant they actually are. I gues I'll go dismantle that illegal weapons stockpile.

i'd rather give money to a semi-corrupt organization that does some good than give nothing at all; well, at least that's what i tell myself to feel better about the donations i've made to them :(..
if there are any smaller, reputable organizations in the area there that work with volunteers, i'm sure they'll be putting their donations to better use, but i couldn't find any, not that i really tried to find one which i kind of feel bad about now, oh well. that being said, anyone have links to better alternatives than redcross?
