Lets say I have a song I bought from amazon as a digital download. How are they able to tell the difference between it being a illegal download? Also If I get it from amazon am I able to put it on any device. Not like being from the apple store where you can only put it on a iDevice
Technically you aren't buying the MP3 but a non-transferable licence for personal playback only - no changing it, no selling/renting/broadcasting etc. Within that remit you can transfer it to whatever device you like, though, as long as it's just for you.
Most, if not all, of Apple's downloads are (or are available as) DRM free MP3s which can be used in any device. That switch started a few years ago. Amazon's are also DRM free, but I believe you had to download with their program, which isnt a big deal.
You don't, or at least, not from their co.uk site. When you buy a track the page has a big "DOWNLOAD THIS SOFTWARE NOW! IT'S GREAT BLAH BLAH BLAH" prompt and in tiny writing at the bottom "if you don't want to download this software, click here to get your MP3 file". Works fine, anyway.
Back in the day, you traded money for items that once cost money to be made. Today, you are supposed to trade money for items that never cost anyone anything to be made. I don't get it and I won't support it. Not for the comfort, not for anything. Many years will pass by and at some point I'll probably become a "stubborn old man who can't cope with progress"
I believe the OP was wondering how could anyone tell if an mp3 is one you bought, illegally downloaded, or ripped yourself, correct? Like is there any difference between the three. Well I know that apple and Amazon always have unnecessary b.s. metadata attached to their songs (so the Ipod knows what artist/album/genre it is, etc.) Lots of times when you download or rip it yourself most people don't bother to fill that shit out unless a program does it for you. The way people get caught though, isn't it from said companies monitoring traffic, torrents, and the like (often times illegally?) It's not really from the cops seizing your computer and examining the files, it's more from they have a record of your IP address downloading all this stuff from sever X Y and Z, or whatever. Correct?
So just plant it on a I bought a cheap ide enclosure and used a spare ide drive I had. I just plug it in and plant music on it when I get more (legally I'm done torrenting)
I do, do that but say If I wanted to transfer that over to my laptop, then my phone etc, I don't want to have to use a USB drive each time,I want an iTunes style system which allows for multiple re-downloads.
Typical immature kid who doesn't give a damn. The artists do get very little but atleast they're getting some from you buying it.
Typical jack ass jumping to conclusions I'm older than you are. If you hate an industry don't support it. It's the only way to make them change. Pot calling the kettle black http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20100201/0234157986.shtml so fuck the music industry and if you wanna call my ideals immature then fuck you. I support artists not greedy assholes. I've noticed CD prices have gone down but it's not enough... I won't buy music again until artists get at least 75% for their work
So then actually you don't support artists, and yet again you're making excuses for downloading what you want for free whilst pretending to give a fuck. Why do you do this? You incessantly antagonise, baiting for a response. I don't care what you download, but it amazes me that with all the rules, regulations and strict moderation around here that you've somehow managed to last this long.
You said that you support artists, you said that you don't support artists because they don't get paid properly, and you said that people should just download music for free anyway. So yes, I read what you said, and it contradicted itself a few times in a row. Nice one. Yeah, right.
About the Amazon "can I put the MP3 on my MP3-Player" q': I bought MP3s via Amazon, even d/l'ed using their app. Then simply copied the MP3 onto my PSP (which in this case should count as plain MP3 player) and I am listening to it since then while on the road In other words: works nicely, no DRM or other restricting sheet.
Im not a big fan of digital downloads. If I part with my cash I tend to want something to show for it. Can get a fair bit more expensive but in my opinion its worth it.
