Was thinking about this today... thought it would be a fun thread. What are your most disappointing Sega sequels? Games, not consoles. Maybe you even think this sequel ruined the franchise. I'll start off with an obvious one: Streets of Rage 3. I also have a controversial one: Jet Set Radio Future. I felt it didn't have the focus or spirit of Jet Grind Radio. Tough for me to explain why.
Funny you should say Streets of Rage 3 because I was playing that last night (Bare Knuckle 3). While the music is awful (although it sort of fits with the game) I found the actual game to have far more animation and detail than the previous 2 games. However the 3rd game is way too easy, shorter than part two and overall has worse graphics despite the better animation. It's not a bad game but it's sure not better than the 2nd game. If there had to be a really shit Sega sequel then I would have to go with Afterburner III - Mega CD. Space Harier II - Mega Drive. NiGHTS something or other - Wii.
I always found Jet Set Radio Future to be the more polished, more beautiful and more playable of the two. They fixed a lot of camera issues, the graphics look fantastic and clear, and I feel like I am much more in control than when I play it on Dreamcast (the last point might be a controller preference). A sequel I found very disappointing was Hang On '95 for the Sega Saturn. What in the world did they do to the brand?? Manx TT is what Hang On '95 should have been if you ask me. Why did they even bother to make Manx TT if they planned to outsource the development of their huge motorbike racing brand from a few years back?
I'll say Phanasty Star 3 because of how boring & difficult it can be in the begining and with every town looking the same. Imho!
There are no disappointing SEGA consoles... wash your keyboard out! as for the main question, i'll have to say Golden axe's sequels, although they looked a lot better than the original, i just didn't like them as much as the original.
Besides sonic games? I go with Daytona 2: it took nearly 4 years to come out and AM2 fucks ups the controls.
Every Sonic after Sonic 2. I enjoyed Sonic Adventure's attempt at "free roam" type game play, then they threw it away in SA2.
I would have to say the Phantasy Star Online series. It does absolutely nothing to recapture the magic that was series proper. Then again, I feel the same way about any RPG series that suddenly have an online installment. *I'm looking at you Final Fantasy XI*
Crazy Taxi 2 - Map layout, music and characters weren't as good as the first game. Also, the jump button was fucking ridiculous. Samba de Amigo Wii - In terms of the actual game, there was very little difference between the two, but the Wii Remote was not an adequate replacement for the maracas.
Toejam and Earl 2. The first one was much more fun, finding presents and such. Cool Spot 2. Home Alone 2. Lemmings 2 The Tribes. I thought the first Lemmings had the better soundtrack. NBA Live 96. Way too slow compared to 95
NBA live 96 was EA game not SEGA Cool spot 2 was also not a SEGA game Home alone 2 was only ported by SEGA Lemmings 2 was again not a SEGA game either Toejam and Earl 2was only published by SEGA but maybe i'm being too strict lol
It's not, the controls and camera issues (made me marry my controller with the wall behind the tv) are really messed up on the Dreamcast. SEGA caught some heat on the issue and they fixed some of it with De La Jet Set Radio. Jet Set Radio future is way smoother to play.
Sega Worldwide Soccer 2000: Euro Edition (completely different engine and developer compared with Victory Goal series) Daytona USA 2: Battle On The Edge (how could ANY game compare with the absolutely fantastic original?) Crazy Taxi 2 (the first was lightning captured in a bottle, while its follow-up isn't much beyond more of the same) Fighting Vipers 2 (a massive drop off from the first, and then Fighters Megamix spoiled me further) Jet Set Radio Future (see my comment on Crazy Taxi 2, only in a far less effective overall package) Panzer Dragoon Orta (the rough visuals of the Saturn originals added to the overall feel of these games) Virtua Cop 3 (too little too late, along with every single sequel to The House Of The Dead) Virtua Fighter 4 (after two revolutionary progressions, this was too much of a step back to the VF2 formula) Sonic Heroes (because I could only just about forgive Sonic Adventure 2...) "NiGHTS something or other - Wii" (very well said, Yakumo!) Sega Rally 3/Revo (I would have replaced this with SR2, but I actually liked that one) Sonic The Hedgehog 4 (clearly even Sega have forgotten about Knuckles Chaotix, it seems)
Panzer Dragoon Orta. No Futatsugi involvement, and it shows. Especially in their idiotic attempt to continue the plot of Saga.
Nights (Wii) - I only paid 1.99 for it, and got ripped off. Anything with the word Shining in it after 3, with the exception of Neo and Exa.
