That's crazy, I watched that clip an hour ago and didn't catch the retron 5. I think because it plays all carts and has an HDMI connection it makes it a very easy setup for a tv show to do a quick segment with it. Fallon does gaming related segments like Conan so someone on staff picked it up I'm sure to do these retro game sketches.
I would guess it's for the save states, otherwise they'd have to have some intern beat all the other fighters just to get to him. Plus the HDMI and playing SNES, Genesis, and GBA carts (I doubt they'd do much Famicom playing)
I have got one and I really enjoy it. I have all the original systems hooked up to a CRT and the Retron hooked up to my HD LED TV. The main benefit I see for this system other than ease of use is I can move my save on to the cartridge. If I emulate on my PC or other device I can't move it to my real console. With this I can play a GBA game on the big screen save then take it with me on my GBA and continue gaming. Easy IPS patching is also really cool.
Most likely it's paid product placement, you'll be amazed about the percentage of things (ranging from almost insignificant to bam in your face) you see on TV which are sponsored in one way or another.
So mine turned up from the US this week and god damn is the scanline filter is pitiful. If has to be the simplest filter to implement and some how they've managed to fuck it up. I only hope this hacked firmware can eventually include the shaders that retroarch uses
I got my Retron 5 delivered today. I started it and went up to the "TV scale adjustment settings". I turned off the console at this step/screen. Second time I turned on the console, it is looping in the Retron 5 logo again and again... I tried the "Factory Reset Instructions" but I cannot navigate in the menu with the controller plugged to the USB port... So I am stuck now. The logo looks good... But that is not why i bought this bad boy console...
I found this on their website for you, good luck What is the small hole in the back of the console for, it is marked as Reset in the manual. If I press it will it do a Factory Reset? A. NO! Please do not press this button! This is a recovery button that is used only in conjunction with a special SD card image. You should not press this button under normal circumstances as without the recovery SD card, the Retron 5 will go into a boot loop and you will need to contact tech support for the recovery image and further instructions.
I am sticking with my retron 3 and not ever moving up to the retron 5. Seems promising but ultimately disappointment, perhaps after they iron out all the hardware issues and software bugs.
It might work yes. But the it is a USB Mini B port at the back of the console. I would need a USB keyboard and a converter which I don;t have. This is what they told me to do : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhW-1ES8sNA&list=UUvPHJP6EnHEjyMi9Rf1jYMw Useless as I have no way to access the main menu...
It did work with an old NES controller. I was able to navigate through the Recovery Menu and do a Factory Reset. No more boot loop problem after that. Thank you all for your help.
I'm happy with the r5, but I bought it knowing it was basically an android rom dumper. It's probably been more fun exploring the r5 firmware than some of my old nes games
This could be a cool little system if they didnt steal code, and lock out a bunch of functions. Since its Android I imagine its only a matter of time before the firmware is cracked and hacked.
