I've got an older Dell 2405FPW that uses DVI-D as it came out just before HDMI started making the rounds. Now that HDCP has had it's master key become public is it now possible to play back Blu-Ray content via a BD-ROM (and legitimate BD-ROM discs) like you would a standard DVD? I can't seem to find any information on VLC (or anyone else for that matter) implementing this though I wouldn't be surprised if they did/didn't given their implementation for DVD playback isn't exactly 100% legal in the U.S. (the DMCA can sod off for all I care but cest la vie). I'm sure I could rip the discs and then play them back after stripping them of the relevant DRM but I'd rather play the discs in real time ya dig? Though if this topic is too gray area for the mods tastes I understand fully. EDIT: I seem to have found my own answer, though it isn't exactly what I want it will more than work: http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvdhd.html I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that it isn't DMCA friendly.
You'll be able to watch Blu-ray over DVI. I do so regularly. HDCP works over DVI. Besides which, the flag that sets auto-downscaling on legacy analogue component connections hasn't been activated on any BR disc yet to my knowledge (I may be wrong on this, just haven't heard anything about it yet). With regards to VLC/other free, open source software, none support BR playback yet to my knowledge. If you have a BD-ROM drive in your computer it should've come with software for playback.
