It is the same company that makes fridges but you can't hold that against them (even if the TV is shit) considering Samsung and LG make washers, dryers, fridges, etc too.

Most of the no-name brands have little affiliation with their respective (domestic) companies, they're just licensing arrangements with crap Chinese manufacturers meant to deceive old folks through a brand confidence trick. Just look at all the random brands resurrected in the last few years suddenly "making" generic LCD TVs near major shipping ports in Southern CA... Not suspicious at all.
Samsung however is like the biggest conglomerate ever and actually has the capability of making every component, and to my knowledge they don't farm out panel or driver assemblies or firmware or even the semiconductors, and they R&D everything themselves. That's more than most Japanese brands can even say today.

sounds like you're buying random cheap nasty brands which probably use random cheap nasty parts. better brand and better quality screens are out there and some are very nice, i have a samsung for my main TV and an acer for my main PC monitor and both have been excellent

I can attest to the no-name brands being made by a huge amount of companies. Store brands are made by several random chinese companies - though sometimes are made by more reputable companies. Example - Onkyo makes some Best Buy brand stereo receivers (to the point that there are identical Onkyo models with a different brand but the remotes, etc are all the same). and Some Best Buy brand TVs were made by LG at one point.

But this thread cracks me up.

"I bought a no-name brand second hand TV for $50 bucks and it's garbage. DO ALL LCDS SUCK AS BAD?"

    lol...seriously?

Actually my parent inlaws have an lcd led tv from ALDI. The image is ok to watch tv/movies but oh my, the remote is a bit of cheap and nasty! Battery cover kept falling off!

I think the remote might be something else to look at (with all things).

I own a Samsung LN4A530. I bought that new in 2008. The TV died 3 years later. Capacitor issue, then fried the mainboard. I had to replace the caps and repair the board myself since Samsung wanted to charge a couple hundred for repair (this was before the lawsuit). Oh, and today, the panel is now start to deteriorate. It's kinda "glowy" around the corners, and has bad image persistence. Leave Netflix on there for 10 minutes, and when you start a movie, you can make out the box art over the video, until it goes away after some time.

This is my primary TV now. It's old yes, but screw it, I like it! It's from the 70's and still works great!

    Calibrating it with a colorimeter.

Yup, sounds like you're not only buying cheap brands but you're buying second hand! Both are not advised.

If you want a decent television, get a decent brand (Samsung or Panasonic, really) and get it new. It doesn't have to be the latest model - my friend has a 2 year old Samsung that's excellent and wasn't even the top end model back then.... it was the one you'd get stores discounting to get rid of.

We do need to remember that TVs aren't built to last nowadays, though... this isn't the Seventies!

IMHO, choose Plasma and forget LCD for movies and gaming. LCD is for PC and Notebooks.

But, if you really want, try Philips or Sony. For me these brands are way better than LG or Samsung. Nothing against the Korean ones, but I wasn't very lucky with them.

I stand by my Panasonic plasma as amazing - and it's a middle of the line one. Top of the line ones look fantastic and with minimal to no input lag. Samsung LCD and LED panels I have are great too.

    This.

If you want a real quality HDTV, you need to invest a decent amount of money. And you also need to do a lot of research as well depending on what your needs are.

If you have the money to invest, there really isn't a better TV for gaming right now than the Sony W900A

I would stray away from plasmas for gaming for a number of reasons personally.

More power usage, more heat, phosphor trails(Which is something that nearly defeats the point of some of plasma's strengths), often resorts to a lot of dithering, often lack of 4:4:4 chroma subsampling support (Which is important for PC usage and games), etc.

He told you. He's calibrating it with a colorimeter.

I agree to avoid plasmas for gaming. Modern LED backlit LCD televisions are fine. And Samsung and Panasonic are the two most popular brands.

Similar to Soniq JB Hi-Fi have, remotes are just crap. I hit mine with a PS3 controller and never worked after that. A $20 Logitech remote fixed that problem though. The TV it's self is 42" and looks good, speakers are crap but I'm not so fussed. 42" is good enough for movies and games.

I had a Toshiba that had audio problems after 3 weeks, swapped it for the same one and now 3/4 years later it has the same problem. However it does come and go (the original problem may have gone but I didn't want to risk it). It sounds like audio distortion from a broken speaker, but only shows up at certain times and certain frequencies. No idea

It doesn't support LINEOUT sadly, so I can't get replace with some stereo speakers. Has the coax connection or whatever the sound version of that is... Those speakers are expensive :(
