I really don't care too much for birthdays, at least not any more. Sure I did when I was younger as it meant presents and parties, but now that I'm on the wrong side of 25 all that stuff has dried up and it is just another day of the week.
I enjoy birthdays. Not so much the act of getting gifts or recognition, but for it being something family and friends can get together for as it seems we get too busy otherwise to do so. I particularly enjoy birthdays as a father for our child. That makes it fun all over again. Just another day for me otherwise, but a time when those far off friends reach out to check in .
Well I pretty much buy everyone I buy on amazon, with amazon gift cards. There's no loading fee unlike prepaid debit cards
It's a tough wall to sit on, whether one might be having a party because they want to see their friends on their birthday or wanting to have a party because they're a selfish prick who jumps at the chance for a possibly incredible amount of attention. Personally, I don't want attention so I hope nobody (except those closest) remember and celebrate my birthday.
My birthday is like any other day , Its my sibling who comes to my door and demand I do something nice for my Birthday. I haven't even had a cake since I was 5, my parents realized I didn't like sweets so the stopped buying me one. Now I'm an old fart buried In work I just don't care any more. As for Christmas I just put candles beside the wooden cross on the mantel above my fire place, then I send money to my nephews.
What a bunch of scrooges! I don't see my family very often, so birthdays are a good excuse to make the drive up to see them. I'm in two minds about gift cards... On one hand, they expire which is crap. OTOH, they give the giftee an opportunity to buy something for themselves from a shop they like, whereas if they had cash they might feel compelled to buy groceries or something boring with it.
Do I care about birthdays? Doesn't matter. The question is, do you care about my Birthday? Because, if you do, it's September 19th. Hopefully you are into sending expensive gifts also, because that would be very nice. But I'll take Amazon Gift Cards. Though wouldn't say no to any retro gaming stuff. =)
How I see it is, if you give someone money instead of a gift card, they can spend the money how they wish. Just a few days ago was my 21st birthday, and I got a gift card for Kmart. I don't buy ANYTHING from there, and basically it's $50 wasted for the person who gave me the gift card. If it was $50 in cash, I could of used it for some XBOX stuff, but I can't. Stupid gift cards, oh and expiry is stupid too. Money doesn't have an expiry date!
Is there any ebay gift cards as of lately? Cuz i was thinking of buying a Retroduo Portable for myself but never gotten the chance to get one on my birthday but i guess its to late for that huh?
And that's why I'm split on the issue. A lot of people I know have this ingrained obligation to "spend money wisely", even if it's a gift. I'd rather give those people a gift card at, say, JB HiFi, so they can get themselves something nice. They're all people I know pretty well, though, so I wouldn't give them a gift card for somewhere they'd never go. I do reckon K-mart, Coles/Myer, or Woolworths gift cards are a bit thoughtless though.
If I had friends and such that I actually saw on a daily basis, yeah it would be nice to be acknowledged, but, that's fantasy, so, nope, my birthday is just another day for me.
