Now that I have my Dreamcast hooked up to my Framemiester I've...well mostly been playing Hydro Thunder and Crazy Taxi. I got to wondering, if Sega was to make a new Crazy Taxi could this Sega pull it off?

A few weeks ago I had a really petty twitter argument with a Panzer Dragoon Fanboy. Who can't seem to process the possibility that a new Panzer Dragoon from THIS Sega might suck. Look at what they did to Golden AXE.

So do we have any faith in Sega to bring old games back? Not that they will just if they did could they actually make them good?

I love me some Yakuza but I don't know about anything else right now. We still don't know if Sonic Forces will be good.

IDK how it is in Japan, but in North America the people working in the videogame business (programmers, artists, etc.) aren't tied to a single company as in the good old days. So it isn't really a matter of "could Sega do a good new <blank> game with their current team", but rather "who should Sega hire to develop a new <blank> game".

I trust them to fuel fun times through twitter and nothing more. Anything else is a bonus

I think they still have the right people on board to do some quality updates but I don't expect anything. They've been pretty much hibernating the last 5 years apart from some Sonic and mobile games.

Though there's a difference between outsourcing to a shitty studio to save money and hand-picking the right people to hire for a particular project.

    Fair enough.

The time would be right for a SEGA Android box. Before the *groans* roll in: this will probably be the closest thing we'll ever get to a new SEGA console. Their library is already filling Google play, we just need a decent box with some sort of HUB, HDMI out and a decent controller (a Saturn-style pad will do just fine, it only needs to be wireless and contain a home button of sorts). Release it at $99-199 and it should sell itself. Only one problem: I doubt there's any Western staff left that want and CAN make this happen (SEGA Japan sure won't).

Its hard for anyone to accept but Sega is a shadow of its former self. The yakuza series has been great but other than that it’s a solid release here and there. They still do very well in arcade business but console it’s a hit and miss. Part of problem is most people who shaped Sega in 80s and 90s are long gone.

Ever since Sammy took over focus has been whatever sells do that. The internal teams usually pull off a great new game in a series if they’re left alone and given time to develop. Stuff like sonic mania only occur cause a developer approaches them. So unless they can get some new execs in there or talent that understood the old Sega magic it’s pretty much a luck of the draw.

The best thing Sega ever did after the death of the Dreamcast was buy out Atlus.
I think the biggest problem with Sega right now is Sonic Team. You basically have a team that doesn't really want to make Sonic games any more or don't know how to make a Sonic game. Just look at forces, it's basically Sonic 06 all over again except even more automation and bad level design

(only 1 slope sonic launches off, the rest is springs)
I also believe they are making horrible use of their divisions. Team andromeda is now making Mario and sonic games under smilebit. There really isn't a reason to make a new PD game, but I think if they ported a game nobody has played because it is 400+ and on a undesirable system, I think people would really like PDS if it had a new coat of paint. Sadly Sega is incompetent with source codes.

I did cancel my Forces pre-order. But Yakuza 6 stands.

Sega should learn from Sonic Mania that Sega fans seem to know thier IPs better than they do.

Look at SOR remake and the 700 Shitzillion Sonic hacks and Fan games.

How is this anything like Sonic 06'? That was a broken, 3D Sonic game. If anything this more resembles Sonic 4.

And Sonic 4 wasn't bad just unfinished and bland.

Yes and No. I guess it depend on what series and what part of sega is making it. I'm excited for the new Fist of the North Star game and I think there are a few other series the Yakuza team could modernize quite well.

I hope they localise The Fist of the North Star game. Kiryu's voice actor is Kenshiro I'm sold already.

I think a lot of what was Smilebit makes up the Yakuza team. There is potential there. But that means less Yakuza games....I'm torn

Two teams actually. Smilebit and AV. Yakuza's lineage can be traced back to Spikeout the arcade game.

Unless a licensing issue hits, I'm confident the game will get a localization. Also with the yakuza team being a large part of sega's internal development and handling 3 games atm, I think they can easily take on another title after FotNS.

Yeah I can see how Yakuza and Spikeout are similar mixed with a bit of Shenmue but better.

Kiryu and Majima should replace Sonic as the Sega Mascots. No joke I want to dress like Kiryu in my day to day out and about wear.

Does Sega still make good arcade games? Sega Amusements/AM2 and the like are the more interesting vestiges of the company. Is that where a bulk of the old talent hides out?

I don't remember off hand but I'm pretty sure they put out a new racer recently.
