While making my site I got to think about guides. Would a guides section be useful? does ppl still use guides as much as they did years ago? Me, I only use them when I'm really stuck somewhere and the only was to get past that area escapes any logic. But sites like gamefaqs still get guides and such from several users, not as much as they did years ago, but still some. What about you guys?
For me, it depends. I was using the UESP site for Oblivion every step of the way, but mainly all I looked at were the useful spells, enchantments, Alchemy potions, etc. That and testing out several variables made my character really powerful, despite being a high level. Most people gripe about it getting too hard, but its easy if you know what you're doing. Lately, I haven't been using guides for the games I've been playing. For Halo 3, I looked up the achievements because I wanted all the armor, and I got most of it, except the internet achievements. Steppin Razor is way to freakin hard for me to do, but I got really really close a couple of times. Never used a guide for Overlord...but it was linear as crap. Same for EDF, but it was fun. I did use a guide to unlock some of the weapons though. I needed to know how to get the C70, so I could kill thousands of Ants at once. And the kill the Mothership in a few seconds trick, but I never could pull it off in Inferno mode. I get my ass kicked by the mechs on the streets when I try to blow up the second volley of 20 C70 bombs I planted. I use a guide every now and then on optional stuff, but nowadays I don't ruin the whole game by going step by step using a guide. EDIT: Oh yeah, I HAD to use a guide for at least 3 of the Colossi in SOTC. Had trouble finding the Swimming Serpent, the second Colossi in the water with really vague hints from Dormin, and the gigantic turtle looking one in the Volcanic wasteland.
I only use them if i am well and truely stuck in a game, such as some of the point and clicky style games, also occasionally for jRPG's to find the hidden stuff such as weapons, side quests etc. My 9yr old son uses gamefaqs frequently, mostly for pokemon and the like but im slowly getting though to him that half the fun if playing a game is to figure it out for yourself rather than using guides
I used them in games like Mortal Kombat where the krypt is all blank. So I use a guide to tell me what squares are the characters and levels. It's a pain in teh ass because they fuck with you. They'll have a character be like 50 koins, and a concept art picture 5000 koins. and sometimes vice versa. Besides that, not really unless I just want to beat a game and not really enjoy it. I used one for resident evil 2.
I mainly only use achievement guides for 360. I can't remember the last time I used a guide to fully complete a game...
Every so often I'll drag out my Baldur's Gate II guide, but I never finish it. That game is a monster.
It depends on the game but generally i use them for getting the stuff I missed after I've ran through the game once
I don't use guides much unles I'm stuck, but I like collecting guides. Too bad a lot of newer ones just suck.
It really depends. I usually try to get past things on my own, but I do use Gamefaqs is I get stuck and cannot figure it out, or look on youtube or speeddemosarchive if I want a video guide. As for written guides, I tend not to use them unless the game is huge (Like Oblivion). On some games, I might use the guide all the way through (Phoenix Wright usually, since I play it more for the story then gameplay). I've even written a few guides, including one giant one for Pokemon.
I tend to buy guides for games i know i suck at but want to play through (zelda and the likes) Or just to 100% complete a game or get all 360 achievements.
My SOP is to play through the game once solo and then if I enjoy enough go through it again a few months later with a completion FAQ by my side. This is especially true for something like a RPG. Occasionally I'll check something on my first run, but only if I'm really stuck. Like people have said, doing anything more would spoil the experience.
I tend to use guides for when I'm so unbelievably stuck that all hope is lost for me to figure out what to do. Usually, I'll use online ones. However, occasionally I'll buy one for the hidden stuff I missed the first time I played (such as the Halo 3 guide, which is full of great and useful stuff such as best weapons to use on different enemy types, what the score multipliers are and where best to achieve them, spawn points for weapons and regularity for multiplayer, etc. It doesn't have the skull points, but it does tell you what the gold ones do and which are the best to use on different levels).
I see, so should I make a guides section? would any of you guys make a guide? Anyway, who keeps voting for cheese?
