Does being a geek make you more (or less) attractive to the ladies?

This is indeed hard to answer, the geek stereotype means someone who knows their shit but also completly lack the social skills.
The knowledge factor is indeed an "asset" IMO but if you lack any kind of social skills you aint gonna get no ladies, geek or not.

It depends how much of a geek you are.

You can be a geek, but still be really social, and a great person to talk to, and as long as you don't constantly talk about your geeky shit unless someone asks, it's good. It makes it just seem like your a guy who's interested in something that's geeky, and you know your shit in it, but it isn't your life.

But if you're just flat out geek-ing all over the place, then definitely less.

Like someone else said, if you're hot, you're hot, just don't act like a turn off and hopefully you know how to talk to people, and not talk about your geeky activities unless asked, and it definitely helps.

After doing both customer service and technician work at a university for the better part of two years, I can safely say that "it depends."

Xenon.7 covered a lot of it. If you're not socially broken and don't look like a dork (I don't wear faded nVidia and Redhat shirts like a lot of my coworkers do), then a lot of girls find it cute that you've got brains but can still talk to them about whatever.

A lot of it is also being able to read people. Sometimes people will ask why their hard drive went bad. I'll start off with the technical answer, and if I see their eyes start to glaze over then I just finish up with "basically, it just happens." Most of my coworkers aren't this way and for this reason the customer service rep told me it's going to be a bitch to find my replacement. That is, someone who can fix computers competently and deal with customers. My track record is pretty damn good, if I do say so myself.

If they immediately walk in and I feel judgement cast on me because I work with computers, 9 times out of 10 they're in a sorority and I wouldn't be interested in them, anyway.

There is nothing more hilarious than seeing one of the guys awkwardly RUN up to the front desk and then shout "WHAT DO YOU NEED" at someone. I'm going to miss this place.

This too. I just get "you're really smart" a lot. "Geek" definitely holds a negative connotation to a lot of people.

I have a hard time speaking in laymans terms when people are asking about stuff that has gone wrong with their PC or Xbox 360. :/

Most of the time those Xbox problems can be fixed by simply rerouting backup power to the deflector array through the EPS conduits ;-)

Less attractive if you try to pick up ladies. Unless of course you're some kind of IT billionaire, but if we stick to regular guys with regular income, you're less attractive.

On the other hand, in my experience, you can be more attractive if you're a geek when you're finally in a relationship. Maybe because there's alot of depth in your area of expertise and you're not as shallow as the typical jock.

Plus, geeks are probably considered very faithful (for obvious reasons :)).

I don't understand why most view this subject by two different prisms. You can be a jock and be a geek. There's nothing new about good looking people who were/are really clever as well. It actually makes sense genetically that it is those people who are bound to have more/stronger offspring etc.

That's why I hate it when "geeks" avoid the gym because it doesn't constitute a "priority". If you want to get laid you better be in shape to raise your chances if you're really bothered by your limited attraction.

Also, being a fun/clever person has nothing to do with looks or knowledge depth, and that's what really attracts women. someone who can make them have a nice/fun/sexy time just by discussing about whatever.

If you're not emotionally stunted/socially retarded, then usually it doesn't matter.

One single thing to throw into the arena. Does said geek have a lot of money?

If the answer is "no!" then take your chances like every other geek in the World.

If the answer is "yes!" then go to the head of the queue.

You think I am being cynical, you need evidence? Well...

What the definition of "geek" may I ask? Someone wearing ATI-shirts all the time, avoiding any eye contact? Or is it someone who generally looks like the regular guy but can't talk about anything but his games collection in a passionated manner?

Generally I always told the girls I dated about my hobby pretty early and one of the first things I then underlined was that I regard it as art and that I like to collect video games because they are art. End of discussion. Art is always appreciated :D And as I'm not as shy as some Japanese Otaku, I never had any problems with it.
I think it depends on the hobby and the individual woman afterall, but if she's smart and tolerant and he can talk about something else but his obsession, I don't see being a geek as a problem at all. You just have to convey it the right way d^^

ps: I forgot it, but there's a designated expression for a woman who looks for an otaku and marries him because he'll never cheat her ^^"

Oh yeah, there's nothing at all wrong with being geeky. For me, I think the main issue is always going to be one of self-acceptance. So if you're geeky, but completely unashamedly so, then that's a good thing.

As for money being a factor in attractiveness, who would want someone who's just in to you because you're rich? No thanks! Women like that are a major turn off (i.e. complete lack of depth, no integrity, etc).

The problem is, often you don't know that they're with you for the money. They won't come out and tell you about it
