Many 'older' HDTV's only do 480p and 1080i, but lack 720p. So instead of the PS3 upscaling to 1080i (Like the 360 does), it *downscales* to 480p!

Many CRT HDTV's only support 1080i as well. GO SONY! :(

Xbox 360 definitely a much better buy right now. Who the hell wants to pay an outragous price or wait in line? I think that the capitalistic nature of people is hiding the fact that not as many people are really wanting to buy the PS3 right now as you'd think.

I know they say it's such great value for you money and blah blah blah. It's horribly limited, has very few if any great games anytime soon. It's expensive. Even if you're in it for the long haul, that doesn't mean now is a great time to buy. I'm starting to get sick of the PS3 nonsense.I can't wait till this crap is over with. I'm more interested in Wii and 360.

If your TV doesn't do 720p and 1080i, then it's not a HDTV.

How do you figure? A fair amount of HDTV's were sold that only do 1080i.
720p has only really become common on HDTV sets in the last year or so.

MANY sets only do 1080i and all those people are *screwed* if the think the PS3 will give them 'HD'.

Theres no excuse for it, the 360 upscales to 1080i and 1080p no problem.

They can fix this with a firmware update, no sweat...

But my main concern is finding a reason to buy the PS3...

The problem is that you shouldn't have to upgrade a system you've just bought before it functions the way it should. So far there are quite a few upgrades you must dow straight out of the box. Not good at all! Imagine you just bought a washing machine but before you could use it you hard to install the motor.

I must admit microsoft was alot more sucessful and they had alot less time to work with not only in releasing the system, but finalizing it, manufacturing it, hell even getting games ready on time.

Oh as for the stories on some ps1 and ps2 having issueses on ps3 as well as hd set display problems heres what sony computer entertainment of americas vp Jack Tretton "I would like my car to fly and make me breakfast, but that's

an unrealistic expectation. We've reported problems on only 200 of the 8000 PlayStation 1 and 2 games. I would challenge the average consumer to say that there are significant problems with any of the games in their library."

And you thought peter moores remarks on bc were bad, this really shows sonys attitude about the whole thing. Don't even get me started on how taiwan got 500 units and china 200.

Thats whats arrogance is al about, think for a second they went from having the most sucktastic console 0n 34rth and losing to a repackaged GC, to being the most wanted gizmo in the world, raising amazing prices on the net and creating one of the biggest media frenzy in the industry.

They went from zero to 1000, they are in heaven for what they care...

The good part (for us) is that twice ego, double the fall.

    I didn't even know there was HD-TV's using 1080i and not 780p.
1080i is a half crappy resolution due to it not being progressive and I prefer using 780p over it on my xb360 even though my TV can handle both :p

Of course this might suck for a few though

All Japanese TVs now are FULL 1080HD what ever that is. No idea if it means 1080i or 1080p

I don't think the retail unit has to download updates does it? I thought that was only the review hardware and demo units?

I am suprised at the negative publicity this "missing" feature is getting. Am I the only one who thinks this is actually for the best? I consider the upscaling a scam. Upscalling only introduces artifacts and blur. I don't see any need for that.

At the risk of sounding like a Sony fan boy: It makes you wonder if the resolution mentioned on Xbox games is real. If the packaging says 720p how do I know if it's really native 720p and not 480p upscanned to 720p? It's deceptive to the buyer and I for one am glad Sony isn't participating in this.

Pretty much everything on the Xbox 360 runs natively at 720p. But it's nice to have the option to scale it up or down as you prefer.

You'll find that a lot of PS3 launch titles are also 720p. Would be nice to be able to scale those up as well as down.

Jeilong: You woud know because any geek worth his weight in salt can tell the difference between 720p and 480p, upscaled or not.

    And while I prefer 720p to 1080i, I also GREATLY prefer 1080i to 480p!

Hmm, partly my bad. It seems the US only requires 720p and/or 1080i unlike Europe which requires both: http://www.eicta.org/files/LicenseAgreement-153302A.pdf (Page 11)

I find it rather astonishing that all these issues and glitches are just now beginning to surface, hours before launch.
First the issues with BC, and now the whole HD res problems...Sony should have been a bit more forthcoming I'd say.
