For the record, this is a big deal for a LOT of HDTV owners, particularly those who have a set which is a couple of years old. Most older sets do 720p or 1080i, but not both. Some sets, mine included, do not even have the ability to scale (up or down) 720p to a usable resolution. Guess I am just going to have to sell the PS3 I have sitting in my closet.

cut sony some slack. I dont like the PS3 all that much, but you have to understand that their console has many obstacles to overcome in many areas, since it's such a multimedia machine. As a person who has been involved in r n d and projects, I can feel for them. Some things only become apparent "problems" when people notice and nag about them.

They had more than enough time to get it right.
Perhaps if Kutaragi and company wouldn't have been so cocky about the damn thing it'd be easier to cut them some slack. As it stands, they damn near promised perfection and it's great to see them scrambling like mad at the 11th hour to get this thing out the door.

yes, arrogance is a bad stance.they did the same with the ps2. But i see it being used as a marketing tool, i don't think they ever believed their words for a second. they needed to break the hype of the 360, just like the XBOX wanted to break the hype of the Ps2. Kutaragi is a qualified engineer in my book, he's a smart man - but I think his ommissions and loud mouth often get him into trouble.

Definitely true. If nothing else, Sony needs to get him an official spokesperson to be at his side 24/7 lest he open his cocky mouth again.

I was an early adopter of HD and my CRT HDTV only does 1080i... :(
    I wish it did 720p... aren't all PS3 games 1080p though anyways?

no.in contrast, ALL existing and future x360 games ARE supported in 1080p/i and any other crazy resolution. The XBOX's scaler is marvelous. To the point that it works like a charm on computer monitors, supporting computer monitor resolutions!

Ps3 can do for sure 480p on all games.

Mandatory minimum requirment by SONY is that games are at least 720p capable.

The PS3 can only display native resolutions, i.e resolutions it processes information in, (no post-rendering scaling), as well as down-scaling (used on movies with HDCP , where HD setup is not fully HDCP compliant, as well as lowering game resolutions to 480p when other native resolutions are not available)

smithy: Despite the Sony hype machine claiming that the PS3 was 'real' HD no launch titles are 1080p, they are all 720p, which means on your TV, they will be 480p.

In fact, the majority of PS3 games will be 720p with only a game here or there in 1080p.

Sell it for 10000 (which seems to be the average price right now) buy a BIG ASS HDTV with all the bells and whistles and save the rest for another PS3 and games (or anything else you want).

    Thats what I would do....

Why couldn't manufacturers have just agreed on 1080p in the first place instead of having all these inferior solutions available in the short term while they could produce cheap enough "true HD" sets? How come we didn't have this problem with the last generation of television technology, which I feel may outlive HD in spite of the change in format consumers are being forced to adopt at the moment. This whole switchover is going to be just like in the 60's when colour was first introduced, and I can only imagine the shame of the one kid on every street who's still only watching 480p, 720p or 1080i while all his other friends are experiencing what should have been the real next generation display mode from day one. Will any heads roll in the wake of this fiasco, though? Of course not, or I still wouldn't be looking for those responsible for Betamax, MiniDisc, UMD or Blu-Ray. Actually, does anybody else notice a connection? Hmm... trust Sony not to have a clue about what format to adopt in the first stages of the latest wave of technology!

Mini Disc was quite popular in Japan though. The others are a different story however. Blue Ray? Not seen them anywhere yet.

I'd like to see both HVD and Tapestry Media, but it seems to me like we will see neither. I'd love to be able to get 1 giant disc to fit most of my files on. DVDs definitely don't cut it. But something that can store about 100GB wouldn't be bad.

HVD is commercially available to companies, last time I checked. The drive costs something like 10K and each disc about 100-500 dollars (can't remember)

That said, I m looking for a research and development group for a storage medium design I have. if you happen to know anyone or any company, I ll prepare the relative NDAs etc, so PM me:)
