I gotta be honest here......I never thought of the PC as a viable gaming platform until I started messing around with emulators 8 years ago. So I Missed out on alot of greatness. Only now am I experencing Jazz Jackrabbit, Tyrain and Raptor. But I'm clueless about the whole dos thing. What else did I miss? It's kind of Ironic by the way that to run dos now you need windows when back in the day it was the other way around
Shame on you :fresh: You could try all the point-and-click adventure games from Lucasarts and Sierra, hmm Warcraft 1, the old Elder Scrolls games, Rescue Rover (what a great game!!) and that's what pops up on my mind right now.
I know we had a thread about this but I can't find it. Something like "Reccomended Dos games" or "Classic computer games" or something. But anyway, there's a game called horror/adventure game called Harvester which is pretty good. It was controversial back in the day becasue it had digitized characters, but it looks oh so quaint now. http://ultimateconsoledatabase.com/reviews/pcgames/harvester.htm
You need to get: -Blood -Doom -Wolf 3D -Prince of perisa 1 & 2 -Prehistorik 1 & 2 -Ugh -Alone in the Dark 1,2,3 -All LucasArts adventure games -Tomb Raider 1 w/ Glide Patch -Commander Keen series -Rise of the Triad -Duke 3D -All sierra games -The incredible machine -Another World -Flashback -Myst (a Win 3.1 game, but DosBox can run Win 3.1 just fine) -Carmaggedon -GTA 1 -Shadow Warrior I know a lot of other good DOS games, but I think this is enough to keep you entertained for a while.
The trick is finding all my old win 3.1 discs....quite a big of tracking down, I'm obtaining shadow warrior now. Then I'm going to track down rise of the Triad
If you want to try some strategy games here are 2 excellent ones Master of Magic (cross between civilization and magic the gathering) Master of Orion Both are excellent games
Rise of the Triad shareware can still be tracked down, so if you do like it then you can buy the full game from http://www.gog.com/en/frontpage/ for a whole $6 (which is near nothing...). A number of old DOS games (with a Windows friendly front end) are still sold via places like Gametap, Good Old Games (above) and Steam. These include full games like Commander Keen, Duke Nukem 3D, Wolfenstien 3D (you can download the Shareware episodes to play as freely as you like), Myst and others. Games like Another World can still be bought from the original author... A number of of Lucasarts games can be bought via steam these include Secret of Monkey Island, the Indiana Jones games and Loom. Other games like Grand Theft Auto can be downloaded for free http://www.rockstargames.com/classics/ , where as other games like Prince Of Persia, the author gives you a *cough cough* link to where you can download the game. There are a number of games which are abandonware, not in the public domain but are not available to buy and the best site to download games with a conscience is The home of the Underdogs (http://hotud.org/) So hopefully goh won't turn this into a "Where can I download all these game without buying them" thread.
Tyrian and Raptor: Call of the Shadows, the only good Western shooters I can think of. And One Must Fall 2097, which has been freeware for a long time now, is still the best commercial PC-original fighter ever (back in the day, this was the fighter of choice for people with no consoles. Screw that sluggish port of SF2).
There's just so many it's hard to make a list without missing a ton. Maybe try some of these: Police Quest, Space Quest Kings Quest, Leisure Suit Larry System Shock Ultima Underworld 1+2 Discworld Strife Blood Sin Darkseed 1+2 Gabriel Knight 1+2
1. Play all the Quest For Glory games. 2. Download your dos games pre-patched/fixed/frontended instead of dealing with trying to get your old discs to work on your new PC, that is unless you've still got your old 486 set up.
I have RoTT on CD here. Its awesome for sure. Drunk missiles ftw! Shadow Warrior was indeed DOS. Was a BUILD title along with Duke3D.
GoH http://assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1629 This is a good start , and well you can always PM me if you want more info.
Another european shooter worth trying is Tubular Worlds. Heretic is a nice fps, if you ever get bored of Doom... By the way, what kind of games do you like?
What, no Star Control II? Luckily, the game has since been ported to Windows. http://sc2.sourceforge.net/ Skyroads was always a personal favorite of mine. The developer has released both the shareware and full versions for free - http://www.bluemoon.ee/history/skyroads/ . DOSbox, or some other way to run DOS programs, will be necessary.
