I start downloading the shit a couple hours ago, and Im not sure about the overall size of the game.

Does HL gold for the DC weights only 283MBs? thats all?

it does indeed weigh in at that. I forget how the game controls, but i remember the load times being pretty bad, and some errors saving.

Game controls are fine, but I had some issues with some of the puzzles that required some precise jumping (moreso in blue shift). Load times are indeed pretty bad...the game loads constantly so you better be patient. And yep, some saving issues do crop up as well...save often and use a new save slot whenever possible.

Damn, the fucking seed just disapeared, just when there was only 20 megs left........

BTW, I cant find good DC torrents, does anyone knows a good site? (if this is illegal just tell me and Ill erase the question)

Guys you MUST remember that Half Life on the Dreamcast was never optimized which is why theres such things as crazy save sizes, bad load times (there is a patched version to speed these up) frame rate issues sometimes and a few other odds and sods but over all Half Life on the DC is a verty nice game. If it was finally finished with all the bugs taken out it would have been quite impressive for its time.

Weird, since aparently Valve did finish HL for the DC, but they decided to dont release it (publishing cost are way higher than development ones, specially for a AAA game).

For what I heard, is WAY better than the PS2 version

I thought it was another company that ported the game to the DC console??

Anyway, my question is, is it the full game as far storyline goes or an almost complete build?

its the full game, even with the blue shift expansion. I didn't like it because the controls felt like shit and every 15 steps causes a loading screen. I understand the reason why people are curious and want it, but it really is a shitty port. Unfinished or not, you might as well either buy the PC version bundled with like every expansion pack for $25, or get the ps2 version.

  10. Warez! ...You just answered your own question didn't you?

  11. The game WAS actually finished and had gone gold when it was dropped; the build that leaked out to the community however was a very late beta that didn't have the issues that make it such a pain to play through. I've heard rumors the gold disc being dumped and floating around somewhere but have yet to see evidence of it - not sure if anyone remembers my failed crusade a while back to try and identify any sort of version indicators in the various builds floating around, of which there seem to be at least 2.

And JTI2K, talking about unreleased games and the where to download them isn't a problem, but we don't allow any sort of "ZOMG WHER CAN I DL MARVL VS CAPCOM 2 AND IKARUGA PLZKTHX!!!11", so your question on DC torrent sites will have to go unanswered.

Also, it was Gearbox, responsible for the Opposing Force mod and creators of Blue Shift (originally Dreamcast exclusive) that ported HL, not Valve. The story goes that Sony wanted HL on the PS2 so badly that they were willing to pay large amounts of money to ensure Gearbox didn't release it on the Dreamcast - at least, that's the story that goes around. Whatever the reason, I don't think development costs were a part of it - while Half Life most likely wouldn't have saved the Dreamcast, its release would have made a BIG impact on the system in terms of sales as it was a highly anticipated game at the time.

  13. Yeah, the one I have was originally released as the 'Dreamcast Half-Life GOLD' as well, but it's still got the bloated saves and loading every 5 minutes.

    Hmmm...?

    I've got a .CDI @ 533MBs and a .NRG @ 536MBs - the NRG says "gold" in the filename.
I honestly don't know the differences between them or if they're even the same in different formats because I don't have room on the A/V switch to hook up my Dreamcast so I haven't bothered burning them... = (

I have both the Dreamcast version, and the PS2 version, and I can tell you that both suffer from frequent and long load times. I've run them side by side, and they are virtually identical for loading. The leaked Dreamcast version is actually very good when you consider this.

The save files can vary wildly in size, with approximately 124 blocks being the largest save file I encountered. I would highly suggest that you use a blank VMU for game saves. You should be fine by doing that.

Also, the frame rate slowdown only happens ocassionally, typically when a lot of sh!t is going down at once. As for the controls, they are awkward like most first person shooters on Dreamcast, but you can either adjust the settings or use a keyboard and mouse.

It's a great one that should be tried.

I remember people talking about how great the port was and how it would have "saved the dreamcast if it had been released", and such. But after playing several different versions (when it comes to image type that is), I'd have to say its a relativly weak port. The controls were workable, the graphics were pretty good, and overall it felt relativly complete. But unfortunatly their is some frame rate issues that crop up, and the number of load areas is unacceptable. The intro alone has at least 5+ times when it pauses to load. Because of this I fond the game to be more of a 'interesting because it's unreleased' game then one that is actualy worth playing/owning had it been released.

Indeed, plus the whole HalfLife hype was kinda extinct by the time (with the game id did soar, but not quite like the PC version).

A DC savior would be CounterStrike. Just imagine the impact Halo had, but year and a half before. Everybody and their dog would go to the store for a DC with CS.

And with the game and online feds SEGA wouldnt go bankrupt :smt023

Too bad it didnt happen :smt022

Well Half Life for the DC was to show off that the DC can perform as well as the PCs of that era. It was to show the world that consoles can have almost the same good graphics that are found in PC games. IGN did a hands-on comparison preview of the DC and PC version and even though didn't mention the horrid loading times I hear from you guys, graphically the game looked very comparable to the PC version minus a few special effects here and there but the textures looked almost the same, as well as polygon count.

Even if the game had had some type of Online, it would have been awesome. I had it reserved for 10 minutes, then when looking through a magazine it said it wouldnt lol, so we cancelled that reserve XD

  20. Textures and character models were actually enhanced for the Dreamcast release of Half-Life, in fact if you remember, when Blue Shift was ported to the PC, the models from the Dreamcast version were rounded up and released on the PC as the "High Definition" pack.
