any word on how to start or get into dreamcast homebrew in 2017?
previously did some DS, DSi, Wii homebrew in the past. but dreamcast seems to have little to nothing to start with?

like something similar to devkitpro, devkitarm, libnds, ish?

it was the general consensus for awhile that using the official libraries was off limits because of the legal stuff

but recently a homebrew port was made, and i think being sold, using the official libraries. and there was pretty much no backlash or anything

if someone asked me where to start i'd say Windows CE is pretty powerful and easy to get going

A lot of homebrew have been released even in 2017 (I have about ten).
You can start yours with the link of family guy.

I'm working now with WinCE for the Dreamcast. It's fairly comfortable if you have used win32/directx before.

The trickiest part is setting up an easy environment to go from code to testing. (maybe it's easier with a coders cable, I'm waiting on mine) for now I'm using emulators and it's ok. Fairly easy to get something on screen though, much easier for me than trying to learn the katana SDK and fight with ninja/kamui

So any good 3D homebrew projects you are working on Mrneo240? With more people embracing official SDK's recently, it is interesting to see what kind of projects you developers come up with that surpass the 2D graphics we are mostly accustomed to getting now.

I would also like to see people do updated PC FPS ports, like with Aleph One or a proper Duke Nukem 3D on the system. We have had a drought for a while with any homebrew FPS stuff for DC.

Just a small 3d demo with physics. Not a game yet, also after I get comfortable with that I'll be remaking some shitty Android I found not too long ago. Mainly just for fun. Also porting more and more directx examples.

It's all just fun for me. I'm backlogged like a motherfucker though. I still have releases to do, utilities to finish coding, dc web browser building, TONS of reverse engineering, but I did just finish a couple VMU projects so that's a plus.

In all fairness those familiar with the SDK will recognize it but it does have some additions and modifications.

Hopefully I'll have some time this week to go back and do more on it. I was informed that the modem isn't working

Oh wow is that Zelda? XD

    It looks really detailed.

I used to collect most of the homebrew DC games. I had a huge CD binder full of them. To me, they are every bit as important as the retail or indie games. So if we can see new homebrew games/app/ports/emus, it is such a great thing in my book.

This is a neat topic. I myself just started getting back into the dreamcast it's self as a lot of console mods have emerged since the last time u owned one....it's going to be like souping up an old muscle car.....maybe some day I'll learn to code and such I've and ways wanted to but it always seemed so complex to me

this is super offtopic but you can literally start learning to code anytime. pick a language and start looking up teaching materials that work best for you (articles, walkthroughs, videos, diagrams).

im not even going to start the debate on what language would be a good starting point but easy things would be: Haxe, Javascript, Python, C#, Java, PHP.

    Good luck!

I'll have to look into it maybe there is something I can catch onto quickly and maybe it's not as complicated as it appears to be

Unrelated but I guess if for some reason you need dreamcast native 3d models with animation you could always get them from gdi of card captor sakura and karous. They use .nj and .njm fire format. Noesis model viewer can open the model format and animation. It MIGHT be able to export that not sure.

the .nj and .njm formats are part of the katana sdk, specifically the ninja library.

thanks for the suggestion but i already have my own ideas for dreamcast-optimized formats and i can always write my own custom exporters for maya or other programs.

I thought that would be the case. Thought i would suggest just in case you werent an artist and perhaps lacked assets.
