I own both a Saturn and a DC, but i have to say the DC gets more attention. The Saturn was good but the DC has a better library of games imo
Pretty sure the Sega Genesis emulator was bad, the free one anyway- DCGen or something. The infamous Segagen which Echelon ripped and allowed you to use your own ROMs on a disc was pretty decent speed wise but sound emulation was poor. There was another one that was supposed to be good- Dream Passport 3 http://www.segagagadomain.com/dreamcast-ntsc_0/dpp3.htm
The Sega Genesis emulator that I use is Obsidian and it does a great job. No lag or sound issues. On graphically intensive games like street of rage 3, you might get a small patch of minimal lag in some places, but nothing which kills the gameplay. In fact, I am playing aero the acrobat right now on Obsidian and when I read your post, I had the game gear and master system emu disc, which both emu's work great. Some games on the game gear do seem to lack certain layers, but the big hits all seem intact. Regarding emulators, they are all free and you shouldn't be paying anything, at least that is my understanding. But, yeah, the Obsidian Sega Genesis emulator works very well. Edit: Just tested Streets of Rage 3, Earth worm Jim 2 and Samurai shodown. Zero noticeable lag and no graphical or sound glitches. I may have been thinking of another emulator.
Wasn't Obsidian just a graphical user interface for Segagen/Smash Pack emulator? If you fire up Sonic 3 on a real mega drive or even the later Sonic Mega Collection compilations you will notice that the sound is much nicer. Care to post a screenshot of the emulator? Just want to confirm that we are talking about the same thing Segagen wasn't free because it was made by Sega, so technically in most places is considered warez
You are correct.Obsidian is the hacked Sega Smash Pack Genesis emulator for Dreamcast. Regarding overall quality, it seems to work just fine, but I don't normally use the dreamcast for my emulator needs. I use Fusion through the PC. Yeah, I got this emulator off I believe, TheISOzone. They have many different Dreamcast emulator packages for download. The one that I have, contains hundreds of roms. It's impressive. I'd take a picture, but I am super sick right now, wrapped in electric blankets, so I don't want to get up and walk across the room, dig out my camera, take a picture and then upload it to the PC, to then get onto the forum. I will do it tomorrow if I feel better. Edit: Here are images off the internet, exactly the same emulator. Edit: Upon doing more research, apparently the sound is considered ok for this emulator. It doesn't skip or stutter, but apparently sound can be downgraded on certain games through internal filters which take some in game music and reduce it to midi level with sound effects intact. I hadn't noticed this before.
Thanks for the screenshot, that's the one. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad the emulator got released and it does run full speed which is awesome It was such a bitch to selfboot too!
Did you take part in releasing this? I ask because you state that it was a bitch to selfboot, Yes, the emulator definitely adds another feather in the cap of Monsieur Dreamcast.
The best emulator is a homebrew one for sure by Chui, it still sees updates to this day and even loads ROM's from SD so you can choose what you want to have at anytime. It is easily compiled with bootdreams for CDR use since it uses homebrew binaries.
Thanks man, I had no idea that another Mega Drive emulator existed. Don't know if I will be trying it out anytime soon but great to know it's out there
He has emulators for a lot of systems that work very well. He has a NGCD, AES, SNES, MD emulators for the Dreamcast and a few more if I recall. http://chui.dcemu.co.uk/ There you go if you are interested all Dreamcast ports support the SD interface and he made his own loader which I find to be much faster then Dreamshell itself.
Is it one of those emulators that just cannot get the Streets of Rage "Go!" sign sfx right? Finicky i know but annoying! Nevertheless, i'm gonna give Obsidian a try and also some of Chui's stuff if the SNES emu runs well.
I got my Dreamcast 2 or 3 months after launch, I remember a guy telling me I was going to get burned like with the Saturn, and he was right because once again Sega took my money and ran... The console was great tho, best bang for your gaming buck in history, but mine is about to die from drive failure so I barely use it anymore
Lasers are not but $15 shipped so fix that bad boy and play on. My laser was going out about two years ago, I tweaked the POT and it is still going strong to this day and I put at least 20 hours worth of play on it each week since 9/9/1999.
Sega just didn't have the clout to compete. As much as i love the Playstation 2, it came a cost. But Dreamcast lives on, which counts the most. Backed up by an amazing fan base :encouragement:
Yep, the amount of pressure they put on Sega was staggering, kids these days will never know the hype that surrounded the PS2 before it was even shown
