Hi all, is the first time I write here, I wanted to show my dreamcast because your explanations have helped me a lot.
I used the bios link83 who kindly sent me but eventually I had to use it.

My Dreamcast has made the mod vga, dual bios and micro sd.

I stand from Spain, and I keep reading to you.

I decided to do so in the case of the modem to not break the casing of the console. Dreamcast modems I have 2 or 3 so if at any time I undo the mods (which is not going to happen) I can let the factory console.

Yeah you should at least put a switch! If a game that uses network writes some info to the flash, there's a chance it'll overwrite the region flag. And after a reboot, you're DC will be RegionLess. This means it won't boot anything and will got a black swirl. It happened to me :banghead:

It'll boot fine with that bios, the region check is patched.

I was just quoting what I saw on Fujitsu datasheet for the flash chip part. It has an BOLD recommendation that it should NOT BE FED with 12V for long periods of time in the reset line. Putting 12V on the reset line is meant to temporarily bypass the boot block restriction.

If you require permanent write capability on full flash, clone the 1st half of the flash on the second half by downloading the schematics here:

    http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22189

Then play with the A17 line of the flash chip to get access to the 2nd half of it. Write a dump of your flash there.

I didn't know he made the two bios modification. And even if he did, the original bios would remain unuseable, which if "unsafe" if he's experimenting with bioses.

The BIOS floating around here made by Link83 is region free for sure, tested it myself with a Kaze no Regret GD-ROM a few days ago.

But yes, if the region portion was to become corrupt the original BIOS would essentially be useless. However I'd have to wager a guess that if it did become corrupt it'd display a black swirl on the BIOS shown with the Katana animation since it seems the color is dictated across both BIOSes by the region information stored in the flash.

I just joined the forum because of this thread that I find awesome!

for those who have the link83 moded bios, can you confirm a few compatibility problems I had with some PAL games on a NTSC system?

first being Grandia 2 on PAL does it run on the NTSC system with no problems?
second is the Sega gun for PAL and JAP regions does it work on American games? (probably not because that is a software issue but had to ask)
being region free means no changes to the boot sequence just "plug & play" like the modchip used to work?

I thought I would never see something like this for my beloved DC!

I can't confirm anything about Grandia 2 but I can tell you that with this BIOS flashed onto a chip and installed in all you do is put in the game you want and turn it in. Region doesn't matter.

The boot-up animation has changed but that is the only difference.

BTW, if you want a chip:

I'll be getting them in soon.

Is the black swirl a bug or intentional?

The fact that it is black probably is coded somewhere. But I consider it a bug when it comes with a corrupt region code that won't boot anything.

There's a region code for each region that makes the spiral black but keeps booting games of the selected region. Region changer 1.7 supports this I think.

I was under the assumption that it was black in the bios and it's just shaded to be either red or blue to not need 3 seperate images.
